Earlier this month, the Connecticut Chapter joined Governor Dannel Malloy as he signed a bill that will improve the safety of an insurance practice called step therapy.

Step therapy is a tool that insurers commonly use to help control spending on drugs, by limiting access to more expensive therapies. Now, thanks to the governor’s signature, healthcare providers will have access to a clear and speedy process that they can use to exempt patients from an insurer’s step therapy protocols, whenever those protocols prevent access to a medically-necessary treatment.

LLS took a strong position in support of this legislation, as insurers have begun applying step therapy to their coverage for oncology medications.
