Hello all. This story isn't about me. It's about an associate of mine Sgt. Don Cooper of the Dallas Police Department. To give you some background about me, I served for 8 years in the military and I'm a veteran of Desert storm and Desert Shield. I'm currently employed at Stanley Korshak, a luxuary department store in Dallas, Texas. Sgt. Cooper works at Stanley Korshak as part of the security team. It's one of his "off duty" part time jobs. Sgt. Cooper and I have worked together on Wednesdays for about the past 3 or 4 months. Naturally, when working with someone, you develope a social relationship. Recently, Sgt. Cooper and I were having a conversation about our children. I was telling him that I have a son with aspergers syndrome and a daughter with a slight case of adhd due to her being breach and lost oxygen to the brain briefly during birth. Sgt. Cooper shared with me that he has a three year old daughter that has leukemia. He also went on to say that he and his wife almost lost their daughter 6 times in one year. I froze. After Sgt. Cooper told me that his medication for his daughter costs approx. 400.00 per month just for one perscription, my heart sank. For my son with aspergers, a 90 day perscription is 100.00. I felt guilty. The Dallas Police Department doesn't have the best health insurance. They have a PPO. It barely handles the minimum of his debt. For the life of me I can't understand. How is it that someone "dawn" a uniform daily, go out to get that bad guys and put his life on the line for the citizens of Dallas and not have adaquate insurance for his own family. That's my personal problem though. Like me, Sgt. Cooper doesn't like anything given to him. He works for every dime and works hard for it. I can only assume that his reward for his labor is that he can take care of his family and that his daughter is here. Until I met Sgt. Cooper, I never thought to research leukemia. He opened my eyes. If there is any program or alternate insurance program I can tell Sgt. Cooper about, it would greatly be appreiciated. Oh and Don, If you happen to read this thread, my apologies. No harm was intended to you or the Dallas Police Department. Nor was I trying to put you on the spot. Your a good person and even though I have my children with disabilities, I just wanted to see what I could do to help you. See you Wednesday.
