My daughter, soon to be 5, is just about 1 year into LTN; we have 6 months to go! Her treatment has gone so well, with very few complications or delays. The last couple of weeks we have noticed that her tummy is big and distended, not at all like her peers. She has complained on and off about tummy pain. She complained more during steroid week but she has been off of steroids for a week now and is still complaining on and off. Today she told me the pain is in the center, just below the rib cage. She is eating normally, and having regular bowel movements. I will call the clinic tomorrow to see if they want to see her before her next visit in 2 weeks, but thought I would ask here if anyone else has noticed/experienced the same thing. I am trying not to worry too much, but won't be at ease until I know what may be causing her discomfort. Maybe she's just getting chunky (but the rest of her is so petite, it doesn't match her body type)! Thanks!
Sara
Sara,
I have no answers but we have been dealing with a similar issue for months now. My daughter is in her first year of LTM and has had a distended tummy and daily tummy pain, in about the same location, for months. The onc has finally decided to let a GI dr take a stab at it. We're pretty sure it's not constipation, because it happens even when she's been very regular for quite some time.
We are seeing the GI dr on Wednesday and will let you know what she thinks. I have a pessimistic feeling, though, that there will be no "aha!" moment, and it may remain a mystery (we are also going to the GI dr for another matter, so it won't be a complete waste if that happens). I'll try to remember to report back.
Ann
We had this happen recently, but I think ours was an acue issue. He has been having GI issues and had bad diarrhea that night. Whatever it is, I do hope they find out. Though it does seem too often the answer is "hmmm.... I'll be darned. We can treat the symptoms"
Thanks, Ann. I am curious to hear what the GI doctor thinks!
Hello! Sorry to hear that you guys are having tummy issues. Austin does get a distended stomach sometimes and he regularly is constipated even though he does go potty each day. On the printout for the Mercaptopurine from the pharmacy it does say that a regular side effect is upper right belly pain. Hope the doc has some helpful advice ![]()
Sara,
the GI dr had no "breakthrough" for us, as expected. Her advice was first, to make absolutely sure that Elke is not backed up by taking Miralax daily for two weeks regardless of her symptoms, and then, if that didn't do it, to increase the dose of Prilosec Elke takes every morning. BUT, Elke was dxed with a UTI and started taking antibiotics for it last week. After she began her antibiotics, and before I even started up the Miralax, her stomach pain went away. Completely. She hasn't had any pain since she began the antibiotics. And she had been in pain for months. So go figure. Have NO clue what that means, but am just happy she's doing better.
Sorry -- this probably doesn't help you with your situation. But this is what happened with Elke. Hope your daughter's pain is better soon!
Ann
Thank you, Ann. I am so glad to hear your daughter is doing well. Thankfully, so in my daughter. After 3 hours in the clinic on Friday and a stomach x-ray, we learned she was just "full!" The best answer ever, right??
I was relieved and surprised because she has been regular, so go figure. I guess things were just stuck. Like you, we gave her a couple of extra doses of Miralax and she has been fine. Oddly enough though, we found out that her ANC was 470 so her chemo has been stopped until we go back to the clinic on the 15th. It's a nice break for her and she is feeling great! Its amazing to see her off of chemo. Gives me even more to look forward to.....
Take care,
Sara
