RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Peter has been in hospital for 4 days with febrile neutropaenia. Zero neuts or white cells and other counts dropping daily, and constant high temps. He has a terrible cough which makes him throw up and keeps him from sleeping.

We just found out this evening that he has RSV. I have never even heard of it.

Has anyone experienced this in their kids with cancer? Any info much appreciated as I have no idea.

Re: RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Hi Bridget,

I'm so sorry to hear about Peter.  Justin had RSV when he was only 4 months old and it was horrible.  Did he catch it in the hospital do you think, or somewhere else?  I think we were in the hospital for about a week with the RSV--but this was way before he had cancer obviously.  He needed lots of nebulizer treatments with albuterol.  Other than that, it was so long ago that I can't remember much else.

I hope he recovers soon,

Tonya

Re: RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Same here.  Have experience with RSV but before cancer.  My understanding is that it's a virus that usually only makes newborns and young infants very sick, which would explain why it would also send a CK in a tailspin.  Elke got it when she was about 6 months old (but she was a preemie), and, although she was never hospitalized, was on daily nebulizer treatments for at least three months (she developed bronchiolitis).  I think it's difficult for them to shake it from their lungs, but albuterol really works against it.

So sorry to hear he's in the hospital.  Hope he feels better soon.

Re: RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Yes, RSV is a very common childhood illness.  It is the most common "cold" in small children and studies indicate that most children have had RSV before the age of 4 - some may not have even realized it.  It is those with smaller airways that are more suspectible to complications.  It is mostly in the upper airways and lots of kids, especially babies will need "puffers" to help them along while they are fighting it.  It is almost an enivitable for a child to pick this up at some point.  It is unfortunate though for those that have a hard time with it.  Hope your child gets over this soon.

At our clinic one woman just mentioned that her son had RSV during treatment (he had bone marrow transplant). He had high fever for one week. However everything went well. I am sorry that I do not have any details.Hopefully Peter will be fine very soon.

Re: RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Same story here -- Andrew had it long before cancer, as a newborn (9 days old) -- probably caught it from my other son who was three at the time and had what we thought was just a little cold. Andrew had a fever and a cough, and it turned into pneumonia pretty quickly. Because he was so new, we were in the hospital for a few weeks and then he was on neb treatments and oxygen for quite awhile. It took some time, but even as an itty-bitty little guy he recovered just fine. I hope Peter feels better soon and you can all get back home!

Re: RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Bridget,

Sorry to hear your son is fighting off RSV. Yes, we've had experience with it, with cancer. It's what actually brought Domenic into the hospital in the first place and was in turn diagnosed with ALL. He was in isolation as well, but once he started treatment and was feeling better, he was released from hospital after 7 days. Even at that early stage of diagnosis, they didn't delay the start of chemo even though he was in really rough shape. I was scared about this but they put him on antibiotics and said the chemo wouldn't put him in a worst position. They wanted to get started with treatment right away.

RSV in healthy children doesn't seem any different than a regular cold but to those who are immunocompromized, babies under 6 months who were premies are at the greatest risk of developing complications. From our experience, it was scary but we were also reassured that Domenic would be okay. Once Domenic's counts started to climb, his cough seemed to disappear, along with runny nose and cold like symptoms.

I hope Peter is feeling better soon, and that his counts come up instead of continuing to drop.

Re: RSV - Respiratory Syncytial Virus

Sorry to hear about Peter's RSV.  We experienced it this past March and Caitlin was hospitalized for it mainly for adequate hydration.  Caitlin's ANC was in the normal range when she got it because we had temporarily stopped treatments due to a surgery she was having.  So I can imagine that Peter's ANC has suffered while contracting RSV while on treatment.  RSV is one of those viruses that wreak havoc on the WBCs (in a downward direction).  I remember Caitlin having a runny nose, bad cough, high fevers and throwing up.  Hope it is better for Peter.  Unfortunately, all you can do is wait it out.  Best of luck!
