I hate swine flu / DI

My daughter will start DI after two weeks. She has had four infections within three months so she is very sensitive for any germs. Now I am so worried because she will start DI and swine flu is spreading around our city. Our nurse ( not so supportive) told me that is very unlikely that she will not catch it. She got the vaccination last Friday, however her ANC was then 200 and because of the chemo it is likely that her body cannot create antibodies. I am scared of death now and I just do not understand how can I copy right now. I know that DI is very intense and hard period and having swine at the same time is very risky. How much there is hope left if this worst scenario happens? I am so sorry to be so negative but I am just so scared and miserable. I have only heard success stories of leukemia patients having swine flu during maintenance.

Re: I hate swine flu / DI

Just remember, there is only so much you can do and then the rest of the time, you just have to think positive thoughts and hope for the best.  Try your best to avoid infection during that time by staying out of public places during low counts, keep hands constantly clean/sanitized, don't have your child around sick people. Limit visitors and playdates and social outings until that period is done and overwith.  Maintenance is coming soon and counts will be not so low during that time so there'll be more than enough time to socialize then.  Swine flu is spread through droplets and droplets that have landed on hard surfaces within a few hours.  Just keep hand sanitizer in your purse and basically when you are out of the home, make sure you use it constantly.  Have your child wear a mask for appointments and keep outings to a minimum.  Those are the things that are in your control.  If your child caught the 'bug' after all your precautions, then there was nothing you could have done and then just hope for the best that she'll be able to beat it, which is quite possible.

Re: I hate swine flu / DI

Your fears became my reality in October as my 13 yo daughter with ALL started the second month of DI and two weeks later, I contracted the H1N1 influenza  (I'm a health care worker).  The timing was terrible as her ANC had plummeted to 192.  All of us took 5 days of Tamiflu  (myself, son and husband) and they treated my daughter with a 10 day course of Tamiflu.  I remained in isolation (my bedroom for the week and she managed to not contract the flu.  She actually surprized us and went straight to LTM last week with no delay or hospitalization in DI.  (Although she is still very weak, tired  and not in school yet).

We all worry about the what ifs.  My advice is to keep up with the hand cleaning/sanitizers and if someone in the family looks like they are starting to get sick  (ie fever, body aches, bad cough) see your doctor and possibly get started on Tamiflu.  Megan has now had the H1N1 vaccination so I'm hoping we can just worry about all the other germs out there.  Stay positive as there is treatment even if your child gets sick.

Bless your heart!!

Yes, you should be extra vigilent about exposure to viruses during DI. We were not allowed to leave the house at all unless it was to go to the hospital. Of course, she could always be exposed through you or another family member, but it does lessen the risk to avoid public places.

I would not count on the flu shot working especially since her counts were so low when she received it.

But do try to relax. There's only so much we can do as parents and then we have to give the rest up to the universe or God. We can't control everything.

Re: I hate swine flu / DI

Hi my son was diagnosed with ALL 3 weeks ago and yesterday we found out he has swine flu. He was abit unwell and was only swabbed because I told them my younger son had been in contact with it at nursery (he wasn't showing any symptoms although he had been off it a few days ago) and to my surprise they phoned me back yesterday and told me he has got it, he is ok tho just tired and achy, no worse than he has been for the last 3 weeks due to his treatment. I also asked the doctor if any other children from the ward have had it and he said yes, but they all seemed to have it quite mild.I know I was worried sick about my kids getting swine flu and that was before the ALL diagnosis.
