HELP QUESTION WITH ARANESP INJECTION

Hello,

I am new to this website.   I am in temporary remission with AML Leukemia for about 9 months now.  I also had a stem cell transplant in Dec of 08.   I have been going for IV Blood transfusions sometimes weekly or every other week for 9 months.  My hemoglobin levels have been low and now my doctor wants to put me on Arasnesp  Injection so that I can reach a level between 10-12 range.  The most my hemoglobin has gotten to is 9.3 .   I am supposed to be taking it once every 3 weeks at 500 mg.     It has taken me over 8 months to finally get used to the many medications  I must take to protect me from really bad infections and Graf versus Host Disease plus not having the cancer come back.   My nerves and my stomach has finally calmed down and I was starting to feel better.  Yet yesterday everything came flooding back after reading the bad side effects on line and learning this shot is closely related to Chinese Hamster Ovary.    The doctor wants me to take this shot for the next 2 or 3 months.   I don't know the statistics of using this shot that long what it will do for me?    Help or harm me?    I  never got to disucss this with her either only that they thought this shot would help.  I am seeing her next Tuesday so I can go over my concerns with her.

Has anyone used this shot at all for two or three months and you have experienced any bad side effects and did it help you?     I met a nice lady who is on Gleevec and has been in remission for 11 years, however, she suffers badly with the side effects of Chinese Hamster Ovary which is in her daily dose of Gleevec.   She has CML Leukemia.

Thank you very much.

Patti

Re: Question with Aranesp Injection / Closely Related to Chinese Hamster Ovary

Aranesp is used in some people with kidney failure to stimulate their bone marrow to produce Red cells. Seems to work most of the time, but there are not much for alternatives. I had a couple of shots after consolidation chemo when my bonemarrow was a bit slow, but had no side effects to speak of. B12 only helps if you are short of the stuff, so unless it was checked, there is not much point in taking extra B12. Should be on vitamin supplements though.

Re: Question with Aranesp Injection / Closely Related to Chinese Hamster Ovary

Well, I took Aranesp only once, in 2006, when I first had AML, and I'd had several blood transfusions while recovering from a round of consolidation chemo. My oncologist decided to give that a try to boost the red count. Honestly, I don't think it did anything for me. My counts eventually recovered on their own. I don't remember any side effects, but then, I took only one shot. Taking it on an ongoing basis is something different. Other than that, I don't know much about it, or Chinese Hamster Ovary(?) but I hope everything works out well for you. I would think post-transplant, some of our counts remain lower than many regular folks, without being in a level that would concern docs. My white count is always at the very low end of normal. I doubt it will ever be very good again. My transplant was July '08. I'm not sure with the red count what would be considered "too" low. Are you having symptoms, like tiredness and short of breath? What do your doctors say about the low red count?
