Hi, I'm writing with a question about my 17 year old son. He has a neck mass just on the underside of his chin. It's hard nontender and about the size of a marble. He has no other symptoms. He was seen by the ENT Dr and sent for CT scan. The results of that show that it doesnt appear to be a cyst or a lymph node. The Dr said that it needs to come out but first he will do a fine needle aspiration to look at the cells. Has anyone had anything similar to this? The mass has been there for at least 4 months and he said it has't changed. Thank you for any advice you can give me.
Sounds more like a stone (fairly common) rather than a tumour (someone in my family had a similar experience). If the CT scan is fairly definitive on that score, you may wish to ask the Dr. whether a biopsy is necessary in advance, or just to do it afterwards once the stone is removed. You can google salivary gland stones and that will give you a fair amount of reassuring information. You can always ask for a second opinion if the doctor insists on a biopsy in advance (he may be right on this). Good luck.
Andrew
My husband had a similar growth and it turned out to be a blocked salivary gland. I hope your son's experience will be as uneventful.
Take care,
Fran
Thank you so much Fran and Andrew! I think you are both 100% correct on whats going on with my son. Thank you for the reassurance and I wish you health and happiness.

I hope you will keep us posted when you have a diagnosis. This board saved me from many a sleepless night just knowing people understood how I was feeling.

Thank you Fran, I will definitely keep you posted. The Dr office called today and have scheduled the fine needle aspiration for July 13. Thanks again.

Just wanted to update you on my sons fine needle aspiration. It showed no evidence of malignancy, but because only one of the three samples was adequate he will have it removed in August. They now do believe it is a lymph node. I'll keep you posted.
Hello, I'm just looking for a little insight again. My sons surgery was re-scheduled for this past Wednesday the 19th. The hard mass did turn out to be a lymph node and was sent to pathology. I was hoping to have received results by today but haven't heard anything. Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get results?
I don't know how long it takes to run a diagnostic on a lymph node. I do know it completely sucks to have to wait over the weekend. I was just told yesterday by a retina specialist I have an eye condition that could imply a possible relapse. Thankfully, my oncologist's office is right across the street so I walked over and got a blood test. My doc decided to see me since I was there and we determined there was no reason to be concerned about that. My eye condition's not related to my previous cancer.
However, the prospect of waiting a weekend was a bit too much for me. Been there, done that. It sucks.
I guess I'm just letting you know that many of us have experience in that and have an idea of what it feels like. I hope you'll have results no later than Monday and that things are alright on the cancer front.
Blessings
Thank you Tex, and I'm so happy that your eye problem didn't have anything to do with cancer and you were able to get quick answers!

Wanted to post an update. My sons lymph node biopsy was benign! Thank you for your care and advice. You are all in my prayers.
Rita
That has to be a huge relief to you and yours. I'm happy for you.
I hope whatever issues your son is facing are easily treatable. Or just go away on their own. That's always nice. ![]()

Good news, happy for you. Andrew
