  • Biography: My mother was diagnosed with AML M1 in July 06'. In 1 1/2 years she relapsed. After 3 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation she was back into remission, and ready for a Stem Cell transplant, but she got an infection, Candida, in her lungs and liver. The SCT finally happened on Aug. 19, 2008, 4 days prior to my moms 53rd bday. After her SCT she did well, up until battling GVHD of the gut and GI around Day 70, and again near Day 110. On March 9, 2009 my mother went into emergency surgery to have her colon removed. We were told to fly to the hospital ASAP, because the Dr.s were unaware if she would live through the surgery. We do not exactly what happened, because her colon removed is being researched, however, it is thought to have been due to the GVHD and air bubbles ruining her colon. Well, my mom is known as a Fighter, and she came thru the surgery with flying colors. She now has a colostomy bag. The steroids over the last 8 months have taken a toll on her 5'3 frame. She got down to 80lbs and lost mostly all of her muscle. She currently is still in the hospital recovering from her surgery. She will be released to a Rehab facility where she will recieve physical and occupational therapy. My Mom, Beverly, is a very special woman. She is a wife of 34 years, a mother to 3, an extremely hard worker, and she is dedicated to her family, and most importantly her Faith! Throughout her journey with AML and now the SCT she has touched the hearts and lives of so many. She witnesses to others about the day she was dx and how she turned her life around and her Faith in God became her priority. Her smile is beautiful! Cancer may have taken away her muscle and fat, but she still is the woman we all Love and she is Beautiful! I have hope and faith that she will be getting back to the things she loves in the near future. The LLS board has been wonderful for me.. Not the board, but the People! I have met wonderful and caring people here and some have became my close friends. I could not have traveled this journey with my mom without the encouragement and support from those here! Believing, in my Mom, Nicole
