I lived in OKC in 2004 when I had my SCT. I chose to go to Seattle.
At the time, OU didn't do enough transplants to meet my insurance companies minimum requirements (50/year). They just didn't have the experience I would have wanted either, in case things got hairy.
My doc spent a day a week at OU consulting and teaching, I imagine she still does as she really is committed to teaching. She is from Seattle and had done a fellowship at the Hutch. She seemed to feel comfortable with it if I decided to have my SCT done at OU. But when I told her I'd dedcided on Seattle she told me she thought I'd picked the best place on earth.
Yeah. In know, mixed signals. I guess the most significant observation I can make is that I've been posting here for nearly five years. I can't think of anyone who has had their transplant at OU.
Are you, by chance, working with Cancer Care Associates? That's the group my doc practiced with, You might be able to meet with her to talk it over.
Also, how far is Baylor-Dallas away from you? They have an excellent program.

I am nearly right in between Dallas and OKC. The doctor I saw is at OU Medical Center. And he is the director of the transplant department. He also told me they were on track to do 80, this year. Thank you for your reply.
You might want to make sure what they've been doing over the last few years before you commit. This point is really just about knowing they have enough experience to pull you out of the fire if one breaks out.
I'm surious if I know the doc. Mind sharing his name?

Nope, I got to know a fair share of oncs in OK. But he's not one of them.
Best wishes. Let us know if and how we can support you.
Just to update this post. I did have the auto SCT at OU Medical in Oklahoma City. I was admitted Dec. 16 and released Jan. 6. I can not sing their praises enough. If you are going to have to have a transplant, this is a great place to go! The whole transplant team was awesome! And the transplant doctors were out of this world. I have so much confeidence in them, well I put my life in there hands! Lisa
Lisa, I'm glad things are going so well for you and that you had a great experience at your hospital. Hope your recovery stays totally uneventful! Keep us posted, and thanks for the update.

I didn't realize that you were having an auto. I'm glad you had a good experience at OU. Can't help but wonder if you met Dr Canfield while you were there. She is, um, hieght challenged and usually has anything from hennaed hair to an out and out redish dye job.
She was my doc in OKC and she spent one day a week at OU/Memorial.
But, yeah, there are good folk in OKC. The staff at Mercy where I was induced was great, too.
