I thought I posted this but I couldn't find it so if it's there twice, please excuse as I'm reposting...
My WBC is going way up and my blasts are returning after my DLI in June for my treatment related MDS, so the docs are thinking of putting me on a phase II trial using Velcade and Vorinostat, 2 chemotherapy drugs. I feel fine and am not looking forward to more chemo! I can't believe my blood tests are so bad when I feel so good. I know Velcade has been around, has anyone had any experience with it? How about side effects? Or Vorinostat? Maybe they are just pointing me towards this trial as it is local here at the University of Minnesota.
Thanks.
My husband has been on Velcade for about a year (with a couple of breaks) for multiple myeloma. The side effects of the drug make it sound awful, but most of his problems have been manageable. My one piece of advice is to bring any different symptoms to your doctor's attention -- in some cases infections and GI problems were not treated promptly because we thought it was "just the chemo", and that my husband was supposed to feel bad.
Best of luck to you!

Well I started this phase II trial on Oct 29 and it seems to be a lot harder than anticipated. This past week, on my "off" week, I've developed some side effects including neuropathy, bone pain and a sinus headache. I am also very dizzy. Last night I just about passed out after getting up from a chair and going to the kitchen. Luckily my son was there to help me. The rest of the side effects I can tolerate, but the dizzyness is too much. Has anyone had neuropathy bad enough to cause dizzyness and what did you do to counter act that? The phys asst said she would check to see if they could postpone starting phase 2 (of 3 phases) a few days to get me feeling better. Yesterday when I was in the clinic, my blood pressure when I stood up was 83/68 so then they gave me fluids which helped but last night I still felt faint. Also, I have no energy.
So if anyone has gone through this, I would appreciate your input. I'm thinking the main cause is the neuropathy. I am taking a decongestant for the sinus headache which sometimes works!
Thanks for your help.
I was thinking the dizziness might be BP related. I think those numbers indicate you might need something to help get that cranked up if the hydration didn't do the trick. But that will, hopefully, take care of it. If so, make sure you're getting your liquids.
Just in case, stand up slowly and deliberately, holding the arm of the chair and paying attention to your balance. Sit down if you feel a little off. But I've never heard of neuropathy causing dizziness.
Take naps for the headache. I don't know of anything that helps me better than some time with my eyes closed, no matter what the type of headache it is. You probably need the rest anyway.
I know you asked for people who've been through it. I've been through each of these symptoms, though not related to my illness, except the low BP for a short time.

Well, I found out what was causing the dizzyness. I'm in the hospital again and they did an MRI of my head and it shows some leukeimia on the outside membrane of my brain. They started me on sterioids to reduce the swelling and on Mon I will have a spinal tap for insertion of some chemo. (Not good!!! ugh). Then my team of doctors will get together and plan out some options and present to me with pros and cons. Good thing I'm at a large teaching and research hospital (U of MN).
Can't recall anyone having it land in the brain before. But I've also not known anyone who has had it slip by the brain barrier not get it taken care of. I'm sure there have been some times when they couldn't get it fixed, but nothing I can remember on the boards.
If you feel like sharing what they tell you, let us know.
