Re: just diagnosed (very early) with CML,

Buzz I have had 5 Bone Marrow Biopsy's, I've never had a problem, pain was minimal and very short lived. 3 times Doctors gave me a local, twice they put me under. When I was under I never felt anything, during or post surgery. I wouldn't plan on doing much the day of the procedure. I'm sure that everyone reacts a little different but for me I didn't have any issues with the procedures whatsoever.  All of you have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving.     Jim in California

Re: just diagnosed (very early) with CML,

Hi Buzz:  I got a little confused on this message.  Your having a colonoscopy, and you wanted them to do a BMB at the same time.  I think that is what your saying.  I do not believe a Gastroenterologist would get involved with doing both, unless I am reading this wrong.

I had quite a few biopsies since 1998, and my Oncologist used to put me out.  They had tried using Lidocaine and Demerol, its been so long since so I think I have that right.   IT was not enough for me, and I could feel the pain. When I was in clinical trial in New York, all I got was Lidocaine.  They would not give me anything else because it was being done right in the doctors office, and they could not give me anything more without proper facility.  Then later I had my Oncologist who always did me in the hospital give me Versed, Lidocaine, and Demerol.  That was the best way to get the biopsy with no pain to me.  There is no reason in this day and age for anyone to experience pain with a BMB like before.  I tell anyone who is a little skeptical etc. to demand a pain free procedure.

I have not had to get a biopsy since 2001, and I am being monitored strictly on my PCR's now.  I hope you get it all worked out before you go.

Is it being done in a hospital?

Susan

Re: just diagnosed (very early) with CML,

Just a thought... most MDs like to keep what is "inside" away from what is "outside" (and visa versa).

While the colonoscopic exam is monitored and 'hygenic' I would wonder about putting a 'big'

(relatively speaking) hole into my 'iliac' region shortly after some of the stuff from the 'inside' of

the intestines passed about that area?

I'm going to enjoy a shoulder replacement in Dec to add to the wonders of CML, hehehe ;^)

Pain at night not allowing me to sleep... bone on bone and I "know" you know about that

kind of stuff.

Hang in there!!!

Re: just diagnosed (very early) with CML,

Hi Buzz,

Date of surgery not set yet but most probably the 17th. Been keeping me awake for over two weeks now

and something we "knew" would be done some time (hip, left, in three years - all this from one drunk driver).

I had the left shoulder done in '03 and it is holding up very well. Feel confident in this extremely good ortho

specialist (shoulders/arms) and he and I have a relationship that includes activities out side of the office (he's

an avid sports guy and we share some similar interests).

Hang in there as I will... more later.

Re: just diagnosed (very early) with CML,

Buzz-

Not that it's all about the money, but you might want to get things scheduled the first week of January rather than the last week of December. Look at your insurance plans and figure out when they restart the deductibles and such, and it might be a big difference. The other thing to watch is when the labs are going to be open that will run the analysis on the samples. The last thing you want to do is find out that they were sitting in the inbox over New Years holiday and weekend, got too old, and need to be redone.
