Trey,
re: (or FISH or PCR) that confirmed the Philadelphia Chromosome.
My oncologist said that the Philadelphia Chromosome had been confirmed by the outside lab.
She also said that normally she never releases a diagnosis without seeing the paperwork, which in my case, hadn't arrived back from the lab yet.
She had received the call with the lab diagnosis.
She was very surprised at the results
she had mentioned she would be gone for most of November
hopefully today's blood test results will trigger a double-check of everything.

I sent my oncologist an e-mail, and related that I have been taking Naproxen Sodium, Costco's substitute for Aleve for the last few weeks to contend with my neck/back/muscle problems, and the involved arthritis.
wondering if that had anything to do with my lower numbers
I've also been consuming quantities of pomegranate juice, and cranberry juice.
my oncologist is gone until next week
heard back from my oncologist already
she said that my WBC is still a little high
and said that she has to/had to schedule a separate appointment for my BM Test
apparently gastro-intestinal (GE) doesn't want it done during my scheduled colonoscopy on Dec. 11th. whatever the reason
so much for my catching a break on anesthesia during the BM Test
I decided to be pro-active and leaned on my oncologist, a little, by email, to find out why the gastro-enterologist doesn't want the bone marrow during the colonoscopy.
told her I preferred avoiding any measurable amount of pain.
today I received the ultrasound results
my spleen looks fine.
Buzz I have had 5 Bone Marrow Biopsy's, I've never had a problem, pain was minimal and very short lived. 3 times Doctors gave me a local, twice they put me under. When I was under I never felt anything, during or post surgery. I wouldn't plan on doing much the day of the procedure. I'm sure that everyone reacts a little different but for me I didn't have any issues with the procedures whatsoever. All of you have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. Jim in California
Hi Buzz: I got a little confused on this message. Your having a colonoscopy, and you wanted them to do a BMB at the same time. I think that is what your saying. I do not believe a Gastroenterologist would get involved with doing both, unless I am reading this wrong.
I had quite a few biopsies since 1998, and my Oncologist used to put me out. They had tried using Lidocaine and Demerol, its been so long since so I think I have that right. IT was not enough for me, and I could feel the pain. When I was in clinical trial in New York, all I got was Lidocaine. They would not give me anything else because it was being done right in the doctors office, and they could not give me anything more without proper facility. Then later I had my Oncologist who always did me in the hospital give me Versed, Lidocaine, and Demerol. That was the best way to get the biopsy with no pain to me. There is no reason in this day and age for anyone to experience pain with a BMB like before. I tell anyone who is a little skeptical etc. to demand a pain free procedure.
I have not had to get a biopsy since 2001, and I am being monitored strictly on my PCR's now. I hope you get it all worked out before you go.
Is it being done in a hospital?
Susan
Thanks for all of the info Jim and Susan.
This is at Kaiser Hospital in Northern CA
Let me backtrack and get us all on the same page.
My colonoscopy was scheduled as part of my annual physical this year.
When, 2 months later, in Oct,. after the initial blood test as part of the pre-physical (in mid-Aug), now with an oncologist, she (the oncologist) exclaimed, when she saw the scheduled Dec. 11th colonoscopy:
"I'll just do the bone marrow at the same time as the colonoscopy!"
That was the plan until the gastroenterologist saw it, and said "No"
the colonoscopy is done in that (GE) department.
but I'm being assertive so we'll see
I've had Versed for other procedures and it has always been a good experience.
I've already had, many times over, the amount of pain I would ever stand in a lifetime' I don't need anymore...my neck

Just a thought... most MDs like to keep what is "inside" away from what is "outside" (and visa versa).
While the colonoscopic exam is monitored and 'hygenic' I would wonder about putting a 'big'
(relatively speaking) hole into my 'iliac' region shortly after some of the stuff from the 'inside' of
the intestines passed about that area?
I'm going to enjoy a shoulder replacement in Dec to add to the wonders of CML, hehehe ;^)
Pain at night not allowing me to sleep... bone on bone and I "know" you know about that
kind of stuff.
Hang in there!!!
Doc
hey doc
I'll wait to see what my oncologist comes back with.
when in Dec doc?
we'll all be pulling for you.
get rid of the pain doc and the fight against cml will be more tolerable
be hoping for a smooth recovery for you.

Hi Buzz,
Date of surgery not set yet but most probably the 17th. Been keeping me awake for over two weeks now
and something we "knew" would be done some time (hip, left, in three years - all this from one drunk driver).
I had the left shoulder done in '03 and it is holding up very well. Feel confident in this extremely good ortho
specialist (shoulders/arms) and he and I have a relationship that includes activities out side of the office (he's
an avid sports guy and we share some similar interests).
Hang in there as I will... more later.
Doc
hey doc
lucky you to have a friend that is an extremely good ortho
specialist. Thank God for sports
except for the accident, you wouldn't have met
we can't ever tell which direction life is going to lead us in
make the best of it
keep us tuned in
nice that you have the other shoulder experience to look
back on

my doctor hasn't rescheduled the bone marrow biopsy yet
I'm not very anxious to ask her about the delay in rescheduling it (avoiding pain)
maybe after the holidays I'll be in a mood to ask her about it.
I'm supposed to begin Gleevec coincident with the bone marrow test
being on Gleevec is undoubtedly better, sooner, rather than later.
I should be hearing from my doctor re: Tuesday's blood test, I'll ask her then
Just want you to know I am here for ya Buzz.
Bless you all and I am learning a lot here.
Buzz-
Not that it's all about the money, but you might want to get things scheduled the first week of January rather than the last week of December. Look at your insurance plans and figure out when they restart the deductibles and such, and it might be a big difference. The other thing to watch is when the labs are going to be open that will run the analysis on the samples. The last thing you want to do is find out that they were sitting in the inbox over New Years holiday and weekend, got too old, and need to be redone.
