Travel Medical Insurance

We are wanting to purchase travel medical insurance for the US but we're having a tough time finding a supplier for yearly personal travel insurance. We live on the border in Canada so we do cross border shopping quite regularly. The companies we've looked into thus far won't insure a person with a condition such as cancer, regardless of age. Has anyone found an insurance company that provides good medical coverage?

Re: Travel Medical Insurance

I didn't find one. I would also be interested if someone has.It is a problem traveling to any area where the billing costs are much higher than what our medical system pays here.

One company offered insurance that excluded any medical problems that were related to the pre-existing condition, but I felt that leukemia would complicate any medical treatment, and that they'd deny coverage. Even a broken leg would probably be treated differently.

Another one, TIC, rejected my son after I listed the medications he was on, but said I could provide documentation from the doctor. I felt they were going to ultimately turn him down again.

Re: Travel Medical Insurance

Unfortunately, many types of insurance - travel insurance, life insurance, mortgage protection insurance etc will be an issue for the entire life of a childhood cancer survivor.  My son (age 3 at diagnosis) is 7 years out from a bmt in first remission for aml - theoretically and in all probability cured.  But even now we cannot get full travel insurance - on the 3 occasions in the last 5 years (and as recently as last month) that we have travelled and obtained travel insurance the insurance policy has specifically excluded anything directly or indirectly related to his leukemia.

Our hospital has reported instances of past patients (treated young in life but now adults) being denied mortgage protection insurance 10, 15, 20 years after completion of successful treatment.

So I hope that when my son is a young adult that he does not elect to go backpacking around the world !
