Re: cml insurance problems

Dee,

I'm so sorry you have all of this new stress added to your usual stress! I use Medco and I have mixed reactions. I had to take a Gleevec break due to low ANC, I still had two months left but when I went to renew they told me the prescription had been cancelled! I was furious and asked who cancelled it - I was told my doctor and that was BS. One of their "nurses" misunderstood my oncs nurse when she explained I was just taking a short break.

It took 10 days to get that straightened out and by then I had found out the G was causing liver toxicity. I was off G for 7 weeks getting my liver enzymes back to normal so they could switch me to Sprycel - that took another 7-10s to process. I only get the Sprycel one month at a time while I got the G three months at a time. During those 7 weeks my CBC was great even though I was worried that any day they would shoot up.

Also, they don't ship my stuff in coolers with ice. I get the old FedEx box!

Good luck, it sounds like you got a lot of good advice and help. Just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you and hope all goes well!

Pat

Re: cml insurance problems

I get my Gleevec thru Express Scripts-a 90 day supply via UPS and it comes in a plastic bag with bubble packing around it in a box. I've even gotten thru their speciatly co. which is Curascripts but they only give me 30 day supply for the same amount of money-they sent it to me the same way. I never have gotten it in a cooler with dry ice. How long is it good for? How warm or cold should it be allowed to get before it is no longer any good? Until I read this I didn't know that this could be a problem. Their just is to much to wrap my Gleevec addled brain around!!! I feel like I'm going back to college at 50 trying to learn a whole new career in CML!!! You have to learn about Insurance, disease process, cell growth, medicine, treatment, tests, side effects, ect., ect....... I guess it's been going on 2 yrs. & I am still here & happy, learning, and asking questions. I'm sure I have asked the same questions over and over again. One of these days It might stick! jill

Re: cml insurance problems

Hi Jill,

If it makes you feel any better, my drugs (both Gleevec and now Sprycel) have always arrived in bubble-pack manila envelopes.  I've never heard of the dry ice, either, but who knows?  When I was taking Gleevec, my insurance provided 3 months worth at a time, but now that I'm on Sprycel, I only get a one month supply when I order.

I agree with you ------------ there's too much to learn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And once you think you've got it down, some other side effect appears or someone mentions something you've never heard of before.

We'll just keep plugging along and hopefully helping one another along the way...............

Re: cml insurance problems

I was diagnosed in Jan. 08 & it took me 1 yr. & 8 months just to get enough guts to do some research on CML. I was scared & just kind of hoped if I pretented I didn't have it that it would disappear! I went to the ONC Doc every month & took my meds & did all the other things I was supposed to do except do some reading and research on the computer. Ignoring it didn't make it go away! My family & friends who are "normal" (who don't have the big C) treat you differently-they don't mean to but they do. They do not know what to say. A couple of them didn't even know that Leukemia was Cancer!!! So you cannot even get anyone to talk to you about it! Or even joke around about that! After all you have to laugh at this & some of these side effects! The brain freeze & sharts are funny! jill

Re: cml insurance problems

Dee,

I currently have Medco for my perscription insurance.  I have to go through Accredo RX which is a speciality RX for Medco for my Cancer drugs.  Their # 901-381-7555.  They are expecially helpful.  Might be helpful to give them a call!  Hope this helps.

Re: cml insurance problems

Hi, what is right way to ship Gleevec?  It looks like different pharmacies ship it differently.  My last dosage (3 month supply) before I noticed this discussion came in an envelope.   Starting this month, I'm required to order through specialty pharmacy.  I just called to order and was told that they ship it bubble-wrapped  in a FedEx box.  Is it OK?  They say that bubble wrap and additional layer of envelope (?), keeps the temperature stable.  Novartis says that G should be stored between 59 and 86F (they suggest cold pack but it looks like cold pack would be below 59 but maybe not?).  I live in MN and our temperatures are below 59F most of the year especially at nights.  Thanks.

Re: cml insurance problems

Hi:  I have had my Gleevec come in all different ways.  I have had them just come in a box with the bubble wrap, but lately they are packing it in a styrofoam box with cold packs layed on top.  I do not worry about it, because they check to see what date I want it, and then it comes overnight by Federal Express.

Its never out in the heat or cold long enough to be destroyed in any way.  I have found that I get better service from Fed Ex rather than UPS.

You have nothing to worry about I am sure.

Susan
