Has any one had severe muscle cramps or pains in the back while using Gleevec? Today I was literally floored by the pain in my back and sides for about 40 minutes, now it's just a severe pain. Never thought I would say "just a severe pain" like it was simply a nuicance. Of course my Onc is gone for the day, so called my primary care Doctor and he has precribed Vicuprofen. Sure hope it helps. I have been taking the Gleevec for almost a month with just a few other side effects but this one is nasty, if indeed it is a side effecct. Would appreciate any input.
Thanks,
MJL
MJL, About three weeks after starting Gleevec, I had my first episode of back pain, leg pain/heaviness/aching as well as some actual cramping in one leg. That was just before Christmas. I do not get that every day. However, I still get some aching and it is always in my low back and in my sides as well, but certainly not every day. The cramping has not been recurrent as it was that day, however the aching still happens. I did not have high white counts at diagnosis, so it does not seem to be relevant to the severity of disease symptoms prior to treatment. I hope this is not recurrent for you. I used a topical analgesic cream which actually worked wonders and I felt much better in a very short while. I don't know if it is a matter of your body getting used to the drug, but it is interesting these symptoms did occur close to the end of the first month as it did for me. It is quite annoying I agree !
Hi,
I've been on Gleevec for about a month now too. I have experienced exactly what you described Janne, heavy, achy sensation in my right leg and occasionally shooting pains in my hips and legs. It typically goes away after a bit and responds well to Ibuprofen. I'm worried about taking the Ibuprofen too often due to the possible GI issues that can happen. I'm crossing my fingers that the aches and pains will diminish over time.
My husband has CML and has the pains and spasm a lot. He has been on Gleevec 400 mg daily since Oct. 3rd. I take Co-enzyme Q 10 for my chronic fatigue. On this site I saw that other people took Q-10 so I asked the Dr. and she okay'd it. However, my chiropracter gave me 1000mg and that is what I started him on. However, after a week I cut it down to 1/2 of 1000 mg in the morning and the other half in the evening. WE have an appt next week at OSU and I am going to check with the oncologist then. He also takes ultram too but has been able to cut down on this since he's been taking Co-enzyme Q 10. You can buy the Q-10 at Krogers, Walmart, etc. but they are more expensive and not as good of quality as what the chiropracter or a health food store would have.
Good luck
