Harvesting embryos before chemotherapy

Before she receives chemotherapy, my friend (who is 29) needs to have her embryos harvested. Does anyone know if this is typically covered under health care plans for this situation? She has Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Re: Harvesting embryos before chemotherapy

What kind of chemo is your friend having? I had 6 cycles of ABVD (and 16 rads) and just stayed on birth control. With ABVD the risks of loosing fertility are minimal. My periods came back 6 months after treatments and I got pregnant about a year and a half later. I now have a healthy 3 year old. I was only 22 when diagnosed.

Has she been advised by her doctors to harvest embryos? That just seems a little drastic. Now if she has relapsed Hodgkin's the treatment will be much more toxic and the risk of loosing fertility are much higher. From what I learned (after relapsing) about harvesting and with my insurance it was NOT covered. Just depends on her insurance...some cover it but most don't. The process also takes about 3 months so she needs to consider how soon she needs to start treatments.

Hope this helps! Best of luck to her!
