Another ABVD question

Hi All

I finished 6 cycles ABVD on 4 June. I noticed about my 9th treatment that the nail on my big toe was turning black. Since then I have lost the nail. Now the nails on both thumbs are getting loose. I did 2 days of Apheresis this week getting ready for my bone marrow transplant & the nurse there told me that this is a common side effect of chemo. Has anyone else experienced this or even heard of anything like this? I seem to remember someone mentioning in one post that their finger nails were  tender, but that is the closest I have ever heard of this.

Re: Another ABVD question

I've got dark stripes down a few of my fingernails. I showed them to my doc and she shrugged it off as a side effect. She told me that the ABVD goes after any cells that multiply rapidly: hair, nails, taste buds, mucous membranes, and cancer cells.

I haven't lost any of my nails, but when I showed the stripes on my nails to my doc, she said something like, "Oh yeah, that's not uncommon...some people even lose their nails." I guess unfortunately, you get to be that some person, Mike.

Still, if you're concerned you should probably talk to you doc about it. I'm by no means qualified to dole out medical advice, I'm just passing on what I was told.

Take care,

Peter

Re: Another ABVD question

Hi Mike.  I finished R-CHOP in 4/08 for DLBCL NHL and my fingernails got wavy and ridgey and soft.  My toenails did the same, but also there was some separation of nail from the bed.  Also some discolration, and finally lost one toenail (maybe two?)  It has since come back, and nails are "somewhat" normal.  One feel sort of ingrown at the side; can't tell, as the discomfort is sporadic.

I was also told that chemo does a number on the nails, but it gets better.

Re: Another ABVD question

Hi Mike,

a few of my nails have turned black since I started my ABVD treatment. They haven't fallen off yet, but I've noticed that the color gets darker as each treatment goes by.  I, like Peter, showed them to my doctor and nurse and they both did not seem overly concerned. They said it was very normal and it is possible to lose the nails completely. But they will grow back. Still, its important to talk to your doctor about any changes in your body that you're experiencing. Good luck and hang in there!
