Just wondering about prozac and MDS

My mother was diagnosed with essential thrombocytosis which she had for about 12 years when suddenly at the age of 52 she was diagnosed with myelofibrosis.  I say suddenly as she lived pretty event free before this, taking the occassional warfarin.  By the time the myelofibrosis was discovered it was found that she was most likely in a stage where the disease was progressing to AML.  Unfortunately she passed away one month later due to chemo complications.  Her bone marrow was totally "dry".  I do recall though, that her doctor had told her that this all may have been caused by Prozac  and that in very rare cases, the bone marrow may be affected(this was 15 years ago)  All these years I never wanted to delve into her conditions for fear of discovering more than I want.  That all changed two years ago when my own four year old son was diagnosed with t-cell ALL.  Of course the doctors claim that there is absolutely no connection, just coincidence, as they are two different disorders.  Once I had researched the side effects of prozac and did find that it regulates seratonin through some sort of platelet connection.  We always wondered after this conversation with the doctor if the prozac did indeed affect my mother's bone marrow production in some rare way.

Just curious to know if anyone with MDS was ever on any medications before their diagnosis, as to hear from real people is much more reliable sometimes than reading controlled studies in medical journals.   Thanks

Re: Just wondering about prozac and MDS

I think that we all look at the "connections" and "could haves"... It is only natural. Not so much as to "blame" other things, but for understanding and feeling of contentment.  I went in for a weight loss procedure, had it done - and 3 days later my WBC was all whacked out.  Sometimes I think that maybe the procedure caused it... other times I feel grateful that had I not had the procedure, the Leukemia may have turned into AML.

I know that Im not answering your question, but I too often wonder if something "caused" it.

Best of luck to you and your family.
