Hi there,
This is my first post, but was hoping for some input on my current situation?
Nine months ago I found a small hard immobile lump in my neck... went to the doctor and he ordered an ultrasound, which came back inconclusive (two lumps found which could be lymph nodes or possibly benign salivary gland tumour).
I had a follow up ultrasound a month later, which said a similar thing (not a great deal of change). The doctor was going to leave it at that, but I asked for a FNA (owing to a family history of lymphoma - four members of my extended family)....
Fast forward a few months... the FNA results have come back inconclusive too... they found a third lump (similar in appearance to the first two) and confirmed that they are lymph nodes. The radiologists report stated 'no malignancy detected, but can't rule out small cell lymphoma'.
My doctor is of the opinion that I should let it rest... if there is any change I should go back and see him; if they get bigger he may consider sending me to a specialist next year.
If the FNA can't rule out lymphoma, surely further investigation now is a good idea?
I'm confused and not sure what to do next... does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone been in a similar situation?
Thank-you so much for reading.
Best wishes,
Jillian
Hi Jillian, and welcome. Sorry you have the need to be here. I have not been in a similar situation, but I can tell you for sure that I would insist on an excisional biopsy where they remove one complete enlarged lymph node. From what I understand, FNB can be inaccurate, and for peace of mind, just insist they take the whole thing out. Then you hopefully will have a definitive answer. Good luck and keep us posted.

From what you’ve written, I’d say that your doctor is giving you good advice. Of course, if you are very worried about the lack of explanation as to the underlying cause for your enlarged lymph nodes, you can always press your doctor for an excision biopsy (as Mags suggests). Remember that these do not come without risks. Joe
Thank-you very much for your replies, it's greatly appreciated.
I'm currently waiting for an appointment with a specialist... given that I have no answers and my lumps are slowly growing in size and number, I think I'd prefer to put up with the aftermath of an excisional biopsy and have it come back negative, than ignore it in the hope that it'll disappear, only to be diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma in a few years time.
All the best and I will try to update when I have more information.
Kind regards,
Jill
