Newly diagnosed family member

I am new to this board, and would appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Two days ago, a close family member was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia. He is in his late 80's, but in good health, active, independent. The doctor told him that the intensive chemo that is usually given when these cases are first diagnosed is not available to him because of his age. He has been given 3 months to live. He has been put on hydrea, although he understands this is not a cure.

I am thinking of taking him to Sloan Kettering or another cancer center for another opinion, and althought the doctor was happy to refer me, he was also definitive that they would concur.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give. Is there anything else that can be done to help him?

Thank you.

Re: Newly diagnosed family member

Ishtar, hello and welcome.  You might want to post this under Living with . . .  and then look to the right and pick the type of leukemia your family member was diagnosed with and I believe you may get more response.  Also, getting a second opionion is always worthwhile in my book.

God speed and good luck,

Jane
