Hello Everyone, Let me introduce myself..I'm Deanna Brown from Laurel, Delaware. I am involved with the L&LS Light the Night Walk in memory of my wonderful husband and best friend, Gerald "Gump" Brown. My husband lost his battle to Leukemia in April 2007; however, our family and friends are continuing the fight he started! Last year was our first year for LTN. Our TEAM GUMP consist of family and friends that wanted to keep Gerry's spirit alive and was about 30 members strong for the Walk. Also we were the #1 fundraising Team for the Rehoboth Beach, DE Walk.

Our biggest fundraiser for the TEAM itself was the sale of T-shirts that have our TEAM GUMP logo on the back, and the LTN logo on the front chest. The logo was created by Cory Atkins, who started the TEAM in memory of Gerry, and in honor of his sister Britney, who is a NHL survivor. The shirts were so popular, we sold out twice, and had people begging for more. TEAM GUMP t-shirt were sold for $20 each, and ALL the proceeds went towards our teams total goal. This year we are going to try to round up some sponsorship money, and include our sponsors names on the front... therefore, we can purchase them at little or no expense, and hopefully we can make alot more money$!$!

We also sold the paper balloons and wrist bands at our family gift shop. Some TEAM members set out collection jars at their church and work places, every single cent makes a difference. We are currently working on the possibility of a dinner at a local restaurant, where we receive a certain percentage of the nights profits, this lets community members get involved and enjoy the meal as well. Some other ideas are car washes, garage sales, and a Beef n' Beer Benefit night at the local volunteer firehouse, in which my husband was President of when he relapsed in 2006. If I come up with more ideas, I will certainly share them on this blog page.

Good luck everyone, and THANK YOU for what you do!!!!

I cant attach a picture to this post, so I am including our MySpace page and my personal blog so you can see our TEAM GUMP logo....

thank you for your wonderful ideas. I have a small photo studio and have pledged all proceeds from photo buttons sold to LLS. Thus far, I have had little luck. I am also mailing out pledge requests and so far, no response, so as you can quite tell, I am feeling a little...helpless....at raising funds.

I walk to commemorate a wonderful woman I met about 4 years ago. She was diagnosed 2 years ago with leukemia and undergone treatment and at this point is cancer free. She was 36 when she was diagnosed, the age I am this year. A very strong willed woman who refused to let this get the best of her. Her 7-year-old daughter formed her own team last year. This year, she is in another city, so my brother and I decided to form our own team. She was/is truly an inspiration.

We also walk in memory of my sister in law's grandfather and my daughter's grandmother. Both passed from lymphoma. They are forever in our hearts and our memories.

Kudos to all of you and all you do! Best wishes. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Nicole

Hi Nicole,

That is quite generous and a fabuluos idea! Have you tried speaking with the schools in your area? They all do annual and sometimes biannual pix of the kids, if they could add to their order form your offer it would sure be a boost! Just an idea...good luck!

IMO, break your effort into three avenues:

Community; t-shirts, wristbands, car washes, door to door, collection jars, and yard sales as your 'continuing actions' type fund raising

Corporate; whatever the largest corporation in your community is, go talk to them have the official paperwork from LLS and the area coordinator's contact information.

Local 'Corporate' Business; You have to tailor the request to the business ie, for a bookstore you would talk about the cognitive effects that chemo has on children and how it effects thier education...........

Some hits on this side that we had:

Kohls, supplied 6 workers for the walk and a grant of $500.00

Best Buy

Mercedes/Volvo dealership

Comfort Inn

Walmart

Home Depot

Grocery Store

Some of these stores may have already committed to another activity, this is no problem....ask them for donations for the actual event, coordinate this with the LLS people. We had a couple of stores supply gift cards, tents and so on. The day of the walk we went to one of those stores and they gave us another $50 gift card.
