Hi folks!

I'm running my first half marathon in Alaska this summer...would love to get to know folks who are also heading that direction! I'm also interested in finding folks in the NYC are who are running ANYthing. I will definitely need a training partner for the longer runs.

What are most people's 'issues'? I used to work in the fundraising world, so I don't foresee any issues with that...and am happy to try and help (within reason) folks with ideas. I guess my biggest 'issue' other than staying motivated to run in the wintry months, is that I want to stay LONGER in Anchorage. :) Yep, I'm worried I might not want to come back!!!

Best,

Hannah

Hey there - I'm all geared up to run the marathon in Alaska! Whoot!

I guess my biggest issue would be the darn shin splints I got. I had just been running 3 miles before I decided to join Team, and went too hard into it. On my first 10 mile run I got done and couldn't walk...man, now four weeks later I still have leg pain that is keeping me from running and is quite frusterating. I'm in Illinois, training with the Chicago team, but am totally geared up for my very first marathon. So if anyone has any shin splint tips, I'd love to hear them.

As far as winter running, I get motivated with my IPOD music and just make myself say that I am going to beat whoever is in front of me. I know it's a little silly and competitive, but even just on the street by myself, if I see someone ahead I just say to myself - go catch 'em- it's a little game that keeps me going when I'd rather be warm and inside.

-All good things,

Kathleen

I always reccomend talking to your coach and/or a doctor, with that said: If the pain feels like it is straight down the center of the shinbone then that sounds like the normal too much too fast shinsplint, but four weeks sounds like a long time. If the pain feels like it is slightly on the side of the shinbone then that sounds like an over pronation issue. To correct too much too fast shinsplint you need to strengthen the muscle, if you have a one lip on front your couch tuck your toes under it and lift them up with the heel remaining on the floor, and put pressure on it (don't flip the couch). Do a few repetitions. In lieu of a couch you could fill a purse or soft bag with a soft weight (sand like) and put that on top of your toes. If it is an overpronation issue go to a technical running store. I hope that helps a little. And I reiterate, I am not a doctor, and did not play one on TV (although I did play Caesar once on stage) or stay at a Holiday Inn Express. Also talk to your coach. Good Luck Rick
