Re: How many events have you done? What year did you start? And how much have you fundraised so far? Dec 14, 2007 3:14 PM
I love reading all this success and enthusiasm. The word "awesome" is overused, but TNT and our participants truly are.
I have done two events. My first was the Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon in 2005. My second was the following June in San Diego. Both of these were as a walker in the full marathon. I am currently training and fund raising for the PF Chang's marathon in Arizona, less than a month away. I am doing this one to celebrate five years in remission from Hodgkin lymphoma. I'll have "survivor" written across the back of my shirt, so if you are in that race and see me, say hi. Of course most of you speedy runners will never see the back of my shirt since I start behind you and am not likely to pass you.
As far as fund-raising is concerned, I have had good success with this, despite some fears about it in 2005 as a rookie (rookie marathoner, too). I have raised just over $30,000 for the three events, counting my fund-raising so far this season. I get a lot of praise for this but really it is not me, it is people being generous and responding to my efforts.
I do use this message when I am recruiting for teams. I tell people that in 2005, I was sitting at this TNT organizational meeting and staring at this number on a sheet of paper: $5,000, the minimum to go to Anchorage. The mentor at the meeting came to me and asked if I had any questions or concerns. I told him that I really wanted to do this, but did not see how it was possible for me to raise $5,000, that I just didn't know anyone with that kind of money. He looked at me and said "You can and you will." I have always remembered that. You never know for sure what you can or can't do until you have tried it.
