How many of you were given blood thinners to reduce your PLT count at dx?

I find many people write that Hydroxyurea, a TKI or both were used to bring down their high PLT at dx.  I have not heard anyone mention they were given blood thinners.  I was given Wafarin along with Hydroxyurea.  As my PLT were 600,000 at dx, it really knocked them down very fast.  Sadly they have not made a comeback.

Was anyone else given a blood thinner at dx?

Not I, but my platelets were in normal range. In fact, since they initially thought I might be bleeding internally (from APML), I don't think they would have given me a blood thinner. They told me to get off the ibuprofen because of all the crazy bruising. So I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum, I guess.

Warfarin (Coumadin) is an anticoagulant.  It was unnecessary, but not otherwise harmful.  Your platelets were not all that high at diagnosis.  The Hydroxyurea (HU) was also unnecessary, and Oncs should get a clue that they should start with a TKI drug for CML, not with HU.

    Tedsey,

My platelets were over 2 million at diagnoses.  The only reason I went on Hydroxreau was because I had an appointment to see an onc about a clinical trial of 400mg vs 800mg of Gleevec.  To be in the study you couldn’t have been on a TKI, thus the Hydroxreau.   I decided I didn’t want to do the study for various reasons.

Hind site, I wish I had never went on Hydroxyurea. I think I took something like 3 x the normal dose as the platelets weren’t coming down.  Also I felt like I had an elephant on my chest and had a hard time breathing.

I think that Gleevec would have taken care of the platelets with out any other drugs.
