President Obama Signs Gabriella Miller Kids Research Act Into Law

Last summer, President Obama signed the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act into law, increasing funding for pediatric medical research administered through the Common Fund of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

LLS played a key role in advocating on behalf of this important piece of legislation. The bill is named for a 10-year-old girl from Virginia who died of a brain tumor in 2013. It is designed to provide critical funding for research projects for pediatric cancer, autism and other diseases impacting children.

Congress’s approval of the federal spending bill last week, signed into law by Obama on Tuesday, will mark the first dollars sent to NIH due to the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act. The $12.6 million will be spent between now and September 30, 2015 on pediatric research.

The funds for this initiative were redirected from the President Election Campaign Fund, which funded political conventions.
