My dad has a cold... Ended up in hospital. His oxegen dropped to 78. Has been on oxegen since yesterday keep him at 93. Nothing on xrays and blood all fine. WBC up to 9 but likely due to cold.

Anyone have any experience with low oxegen? What does this mean?

    Thanks

The only time my O2 Sat got low (83) was when I had a pretty bad lung infection and that was, like, three years out.  It might be something else but my bet is that it's something up with his lungs.

They want to see us at least above 90 so I'm a bit confounded by how he could have lung issues enough to drop it that low without that being pretty obvious.  So I will be interested to know what they find out.  I hope whatever it is clears up quickly.  Those oxygen tanks ain't a lot of fun.

not much new yet... they did a CT scan and it looks like something in his lungs, they just can't tell what yet. No blood clot is all they've said. Still have specialists looking at the scan. they did put him on an antibiotic but its not really changing anything.. i think they just did that to be safe and because they have no idea what's going on.

doesnt seem to be getting any worse, still coughing and is on O2 all the time. even with the O2 he is barely holding at 91. Not sure is pneumonia causes low O2 or not...  more waiting...

But that's saying a lot.  I really don't think you want one of those.

I would think that anything that interferes with lung function could produce low o2.  My congestion a few years ago really dropped mine.

Please keep us posted and keep your dad moving as much as possible.

well its been a couple more days and they still dont know anything... they think its either viral or a fungus but arent sure. want to try him on a fungus treatment but dad wont go for it because they are only guessing and its a long term treatment...  frustrating..

they have him on oxygen full time day and night at the highest level it will go just to keep him around 90 or 91.

they said there is something on his lungs they just arent sure what... they also hear a rattling...

more wait and see i guess.... sure seems weird..

    hope everyone is doing ok..

I'm sorry they haven't figured anything out, yet.  I've had the scatter shot treatment where they didn't know what it was so they just treated the possibilities.  It doesn't seem to do any damage and, in the meantime, whatever it is that's active in your dad is just messing around in there unchallenged.  But I respect your dad's thinking.  You just might want to talk to him about it someday soon if things seem to be trending downwards.

Been another week or so, not much change, they are giving him slightly less oxygen and he seems to be holding around 90-91%. They did culture a couple flu viruses, so they think this may be the culprit, but won't commit to anything. The DR's have decided to hold off on the fungal treatment for now also.

    take care everyone

Thanks for the update, Chris.  It sounds like there's been some improvement, even if not as much as you might like.  But it's going in the right direction, or so it sounds.

They moved him home to their small town hospital. They cultured 2 types of flu viruses but didn't feel they were worth treating, so he is just waiting things out. Has been doing ok, still just minor improvements. his oxygen is around 92-94 (his normal for the last 6 months has been 94 which may explain his tiredness).

They keep turning his oxegyn turn .5 every day so he's gone from 6 down to 2.5 and is still maintaining 92-94 average so things must be slowly coming around.

Appetite and food taste also seems to be a little better which would be a good change... finally get him to gain some weight back.

This is one of those situation where baby steps seem to be doing the trick.  Just tell him to keep it up.

    How are you doing?

i'm doing ok...  thanks for asking. easy to get bogged down in every little thing that happens but when we look at the big picture he has come a long way and i can recognize how lucky we all have been. i think the most frustrating part is that he seems to be at a point where he just needs to get over this last little hump... and just hasnt been able too... but i'm sure that will change and that there will always be little humps...

a good friend of mine has been keeping tabs on us and checking in lots... his dad went in for hip surgery on thursday, had some kind of reaction and died suddenly the next day... he was in his early sixties.... makes you realize how lucky we have been and help gain some perspective... feel so bad for him and his family....

dad got home yesterday. off oxygen for a couple days and hold at 91 ish. Not perfect but getting better. his taste seems to be coming back also... slowly but surely.... so another step in the right direction...

    take care

I'm not so sure we get over the bump so much as we suddenly realize it's behind us.  There have been very few moments where I was aware things were moving forward, they just suddenly had.

I'm sorry about your friend's dad.  That's got to be a terrible shock to his family.  But I am glad your dad is getting there.  Please keep us informed.

Ya i think you're right. Most of the time i just sit back and look at where he's at now compared to a week ago, 2 weeks ago, 2 months ago, etc and then really realize how far he's come. The things he's been dealing with lately are quite minor compared to what was going on months ago.

His oxygen was at 94 yesterday, and he hasn't been on any oxygen or in the hospital for 3 days now, so i things are definitely improving. His normal number is around 97 so hopefully another few days will do it. Says he is feeling really good and is not noticing the low oxygen. He has also been "eating like a horse" using his words.... so that is a great sign also.

    All for now... Take care

    chris
