Congratulations to C. David Allis, Ph.D., of The Rockefeller University, for being among those awarded the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences earlier this month. This prestigious award, which comes with a prize of $3 million for each recipient, honors transformative advances toward understanding living systems and extending human life.
Dr. Allis is one of the lead investigators of an LLS-funded multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary research team that is studying how blood cancers may be caused by the abnormal regulation of genes that control normal cell growth and development. Under these circumstances, genes that should normally be active are silenced and genes that are normally not present are abnormally activated, leading to proliferation of malignant cells.
Dr. Allis was among a renowned group of recipients. More on the award can be viewed here.
“This award is a big deal and has been granted to a truly deserving individual,” said Lee Greenberg,Ph.D., LLS chief scientific officer. “This award is further validation of the high quality of science that LLS is supporting around the world, and David Allis truly exemplifies this.”
The breakthrough prizes were founded by Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki, co-founder of 23andme; Alibaba founder Jack Ma and his wife, Cathy Zhang; Russian entrepreneur and venture capitalist Yuri Milner, and his wife Julia Milner; and Facebook co-counder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan. The prizes aim to celebrate scientists and generate excitement about the pursuit of science as a career.
These types of advances are only possible with donor support. Please consider making a donation by clicking here.
