I live in a pretty big complex, and I am sending e-mails to my closest friends explaining the reason of the cause, and reminding them that it is important to be aware and contribute with something if they can't participate actively. So, I made a deal with them and I said: I am not going to ask you for money for free, I will clean your entire house for $60, so I will work for your donation.

And guess what! it is working! Or some friends don't feel comfortable with the cleaning and the immediately made a small donation.

If you don't mind cleaning bathrooms, try it!

Great Fundraising Idea

Hi everyone! this past Sunday I sold beads to the tailgaters at my local NFL game. I cleared out my local Party City of all of the green and silver beads and sold them 2/$3. After 2 hours of walking around (not by myself with other TnT-ers) I made $120 profit which I promptly deposited and paid to my website. This idea came from my coordinator. I recommend this to anyone, especially if you plan on going to a game anyways. I was going to sell beads at the playoff game on Sunday, but the game starts at 8 pm so I don't expect too many tailgaters. I may be going back to sell more beads at the next home game though!

Fundraising idea your team can use in this tough economy

You're here because you're worried about fundraising. You've heard someone say that fundraising is hard right now-- we're in an economic recession. But we're all here because we are dedicated to fundraising to help beat blood cancers. It's important for us to remember that cancer doesn't care about the economy. Cancer didn't take Econ 101. It doesn't even know whether the economy is robust or recessionary... it is just looking for its next opportunity to take somone's life. I've been a fundraising mentor with TNT for 3 years, and I have to admit that it is harder to fundraise now than in the past. We just need to be more creative in our fundraising approach.

Before you go crazy trying to come up with creative ideas, first make sure you've taken advantage of all of the fundraising support that TNT has made available to you. To reach your fundraising goal, it is 100% essential that you (1) mail your fundraising letters by the time your chapter asks you to do it, and (2) update your web page with your personal message and story, and get that link out to everyone you know.

Now, after you've done the basics, here is a creative idea that our team used this summer. We started with the basic idea of holding a yard sale or hosting a booth a local flea market. We contacted a flea market and asked whether they would donate a space for us to fundraise for charity. This flea market has a "charity row" of spaces allocated for non-profits, so we were able to obtain the flea market space at no cost. The great thing about this arrangement was that the flea market management took care of all the advertising for the market, so we did not have to take out any ads to promote our sale. The flea market promoted TNT by name in print and radio ads for the market. After we reserved the space and the dates, our whole training group solicited items from their friends, families, business associates, etc. We also collected homemade baked goods. The first week we did the sale yard-sale-style, selling used items & baked goods that had been donated to us. We also sold bottled water. With the increased traffic at the flea market in comparison to an at-home yard sale, we had a better-than-average weekend profit. Since it was also recruitment time for the next season of TNT, we made sure that all of our flea market customers received a flyer with info about TNT and the next recruitment meetings.

So far, this is just the basic yard sale idea. However, while we were out on this blitz of soliciting donations, one of our team members was in contact with a local business owner who had gone out of business. He wanted to help us, he said, but his business had just failed. He happened to have mounds of store inventory sitting in his garage and he didn't know what to do with it. Our teammate made a creative suggestion, and the business owner agreed-- He donated some of his new merchandise for us to sell for TNT. He was able to write off some of the value of that merchandise as a charitable donation, and we had a unique supply of new merchandise that we sold at the next week's flea market. This new merchandise sold for higher prices than the used items donated for the previous week's sale. As we got the word out, other local business people joined in. One person who had closed down an online baby products business had a garage full of unsold baby items from that business-- clothing, baby blankets, infant toys, and gift items. An owner of a local spa supply business realized that she had some spa products that were not moving and she could write them off this way. Not all of the businesses we contacted were able to donate large amounts-- but most businesses we asked were able to donate one or two items. In this sense, it was like asking businesses for donations like we would for a raffle-- but it was better for the businesses because they could donate smaller items. After two weeks, people who were coming to the booth told us that their friends had told them about our booth. We had new items every week and even we didn't know what we'd be selling the next week. We closed the flea market booth after 4 weeks. The week after we closed our booth, we had people contacting the local TNT office looking for us to ask whether we had any more of the merchandise for sale.

This idea was great for the current economy because it did a lot of things for a lot of people. It not only helped our participants raise funds for TNT, but it helped TNT's visibility in our community and helped recruit more participants for the next season. It helped local businesses get publicity for supporting a charitable cause. It helped businesses that were having a hard time move some merchandise, and they were able to write off the value of this merchandise. Our customers got good deals, since they were buying new merchandise at flea market prices. And when our customers asked whether we had a particular items they were looking for (or a different size or color), we could send them back to the local business for a larger selection.

The downside was that it was a LOT of work-- our teammates had to solicit donations, bring them to the sale, and work the sale. At the end of each day we had to pack up all of the merchandise and store it for the next week. The participants on our team divided the profits by the number of hours they worked. Because of the way the money was divided I've not got the exact dollar amount raised, but it was over $2,000 total profit.

The economy is tough. But together we are smart enough, creative enough, and work hard enough to raise this money. We can do this. Go Team!

Do you want to involve your children in your Fundraising Project?

I explained my children about Leukemia and the Society, and about what I am doing to contribute to the Research for the cure.

I asked them to talk to their friends about that and try to collect 1 dollar from each (they have a bunch of friends! I just started to to that, I will let you know if it worked!

I am also going to put a small box in a visible place in my house with the TNT logo; usually the weekends my house is really full of friends going back and forth. Spending the night, eating and drinking at my house, playing... I am happy with it. But from now on, as an idea of "conciousness and moral education" I will use the box as a weekend donation for shelter Haha!!! I really want to involve children on these issues, because I believe they are growing thinking they live in Disneyland. And the truth is nothing but the opposite for the rest of the world.

Hi everybody,

Well I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years, As for me everything was going great until New Year Eve. I receive an knee injury that knock me out of the Disney World Marathon. Well I got knock down, But this isn't over! I am going to Alaska in June! I am going to fight back and work harder. I passed my Min fundraising for Disney, but I want to do so much better for Alaska.

Problem is I write and speck about my love for our team and my hate for cancer with my heart ( I can't help it, when I talk and try to be professional about cancer in kids my voice will creak). I wish they could feel the fear that child feels or that parent feels or that husband or wife feels.

But we all know that corprations are all about the bottom line and what we can do for them. So Please if anybody has done this in the pass and has a letter to a corporation that they would like to share. I know we can do this because the only thing that is impossible is something you don't try.

I did the coffee fundraiser with Surefire Coffee and it was by far the best thing I have offered to my supporters. I ran the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco in October with a group of friends who also sold surefire coffee. Our group raised over $20,000 for LLS and more than half came from the Surefire Coffee fundraiser - I actually made more than my minimum goal. My family and friends are still asking me for more because they liked it so much. I am continuously selling it to raise money for my upcoming events.

For every $10 bag of coffee you sell you make $4 towards your fundraising goal! And the TNT logo was on every bag. If you think about it, $10 is two cups at Starbucks!

We are in tough economic times and everyone is looking to save money somehow. This is a profitable way to get people to donate in a realistic way.

We were able to walk into big companies and sell them the coffee since they already buy coffee for their employees. They liked the TNT logo on the bags because it shows that they are supporting a good cause. A lot of my supporters thanked me for offering them something in return for their donations. In this economy, they agreed that coffee was the perfect fundraising product because everyone is still drinking coffee, and they don’t want to buy stuff they don’t need.

The company ( http://www.surefirecoffee.com ) was very helpful if I needed any help and they ship everything for free. It doesn't cost volunteers anything, and they send you the forms, and TNT Coffee fundraising flyer with the logo and picture of the bag. You can pre-sell the coffee or buy some to sell at popular places like a supermarket or ball field. I pre-sold the coffee and placed an order every few weeks, that way I could sell more coffee to the same people. Some of my supporters bought coffee throughout my whole training session - and donated more to me than they would have using a regular pledge. And they loved the coffee! It was definitely a win-win situation.

You have to try this one out - it made fundraising sooo much easier.

My father Francis Myers was recently diagnosed with MDS and Acute Myleiod Leukemia. He is 62 years old and was up until recently a very healthy person. Can anyone help with fundraising ideas? He is going to be having a Bone Marrow Transplant in November 2009. I am new to this. The family is clueless. We need help.

need help figuring out how to promote something.

My coordinator suggested doing fundraisers that tap into our passions. Right now, one of the things I am most passionate about is the Twilight series. So I got donations from the movie company and people who sell Twilight merchandise and put together a raffle. Now I have more than 30 items. The problem is getting the word out without being considered a spammer. I can ship the items anywhere in the U.S., but I need to get more attention for it. Any suggestions?

Easy Way to Advertise Your Fundraiser

I'm training for America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride in June 09. For my fundraiser, I am selling t-shirts, technical shirts, mousepads, etc. These items are a great way to advertise your fundraiser or to thank your donors. I've worn one of my Cycling for the Cure t-shirts and have had many people ask me about it, one of which donated over $100, and he didn't even know me!

You can also create your own stuff on Zazzle, but don't worry, if you're not creative, then you can also become an associate. Just sign up as a Zazzle associate, a special link will be created for you, then you can send people to Zazzle using that link. A great way to advertise for Zazzle would be to purchase a t-shirt from Zazzle and wear it to a TNT event such as your Kick-Off Party. Have some business cards printed up too with your Zazzle Associate link on them, and when someone asks where you got the shirt, hand them a business card.

Event Day - How Do You Remember Honorees?

I'm new to these forums, but I have a quick question to ask:

*On event day - how do you remember/honor/memorialize your honorees?*

I am riding in memory of my sister, first and foremost. But as I've started raising money, I've asked people to let me know who else they would like me to ride in memory or in honor of...

I'm doing the Lake Tahoe Century ride, and so far I have 2 ideas:

Wear ribbons on my jersey with the names of my honorees
Place honoree names on my bicycle (i.e. using Dymo Tape, etc... Picture here: http://picasaweb.google.com/diertac/TeamInTraining#5297584712034677970

I'm looking at needing to honor 15+ people on my ride and while honoring my sister is fairly straightforward (I will have a picture of her on my jersey as well as some other stuff) I was wondering what other participants have done. I am thinking of including a survey on my blog with various options so that my donors can have a voice as well, but if there are only 2 options out there, it's not really worth a survey now, is it?

Just wondering what everyone does. This is my first event and I really want it to be spectacular, not just for me (I know it will be) but for people who are donating to my ride and particularly people who have lost someone to cancer or leukemia. I want them to feel like the person that they've loved and lost has a day of their own riding through Lake Tahoe in 2009.

Fundraising ideas from a first timer - what's working for me

I signed up for my first event with TNT this year. It's the Lake Placid half-marathon on June 14th. I started my fundraising campaign on January 20th and to date I've raised $1,423.94 of the $2,500 I am committed to raise (something I'm pretty proud of).So far these are all donations I've received via electronic fundraising - no paper letters have been mailed, and no in-person payments have been made yet.

Here's a few of the things I've been doing:

1 - email through the TNT fundraising site. This wasn't all that effective. I think mostly because of SPAM filters on email accounts trapping the email before they even made it to the recipient.

2 - direct emails from me. - This has accounted for about 10% of the donations so far.

3 - facebook - This easily accounts for 90% of the donations I have raised so far. On a daily basis I change my status to request donations for everyone in my social network, and on a weekly basis I recap how much I have earned so far in a post on my wall. For people who have facebook accounts this will make sense. Those of you who do not have facebook accounts I really suggest you get one and start tapping into your friends. You can import email contacts and facebook will automatically link you to those friends who are already members.

4 - Twitter - nothing generated from here yet, but another avenue to get the word out about your fundraising

5 - ETSY - I am really hoping this takes off soon. Etsy is a store that allows artists to put their wares up for sale. Popular among jewelry makers and other artisans it is also a site where you can find paintings, photographs and other pieces of art. I am a photography hobbyist, so I decided to put some prints up there and any profit I make off of them I will be donating to the LLS as part of my fundraising until I complete the race in June. 6 - Blog - I have a blog for my photography: http://mattallenphotography.blogspot.com that I have placed a badge on indicating that i am running in a half marathon with TNT for the LLS. Some hits have been generated from this link, but none have resulted in any donations.

So out of all of the above electronic-based approaches I would say that facebook has produced the most money. I don't have a large group of connections on facebook (maybe around 190) but they span a lot of different periods in my life from friends I knew in grade school to business friends I've made within the last year. Once you get on facebook you will be surprised at how many people you find.

I'm going to start my real-world fundraising soon, and hopefully I'll have my committment reached by the time February ends.

I'm the Mental Healht Advisor and Community Outreach Coordinator at a private clinic serving a rural area. I have the privlege and pleasure of working with a great and giving doctor. In November one of top PA-C's diagnosed one of our child patients with lukemia. I volunteered to help dad who is single, who is also taking care of an autistic 21yr.old child at home by making a fundraiser. ONly thing is that I'm blank, the holidays got in the way and I'm limited in resources. Any ideas?

Hello! I signed up to do the Sea Gull Century with Team in Training. This is my first charity ride and the first time I've tried to raise money since selling candy bars in grade school!!

I've made a cover for my top tube to keep it from getting scratched when hanging it or transporting it. A couple of guys at the bike shop thought it was the coolest thing they've seen. It got me to thinking that maybe I can make some to sell to help with my fundraising efforts. I'm including some pictures of it on my bike. Fundraising Difficulties

I was just wondering if others were having as much difficulties as I and some teammates are this season. I've heard that the winter season can be a tough season to fundraise and with the way the economy is lately, that's making our task just that much harder.

Has anyone had any successful fundraisers in this economy that they'd be willing to share stories on to help inspire and keep some of us motivated? I did the letter/email thing to friends and family but I don't want to keep bothering them with reminders when I know funds are tight for a lot of them. I tried planning some fundraisers but for the amount of work going into the planning and preparing, they didn't prove very profitable. I have just over 1 month to raise at least $2300 more just to reach my goal and I don't know how to make that happen and am beginning to get nervous that a large amount will be going on to my credit card, which is not what I signed up for! HELP!!

Just wanted to share this sweet story about Dianne & Chuck posted on the Light The Night Blog. Dianne was diagnosed with Lymphoma recently, but is now in 100% remission. Eco-Friendly Fundraising Alternative for Team in Training Members

Hello All Team In Training Folks,

I wanted to introduce you all to a fundraising alternative that can supplement your efforts. I own Mother Earth Fundraising (www.motherearthfundraising.com), a website that typically works with schools and other non-profits. In short, groups register as 'affiliates' on my website, tell their friends and family to shop for exclusively Eco-Friendly items on the site, and the non-profit group receives 25% off all purchases credited to them at checkout.

I was just contacted by a Team in Training member who will participate in the upcoming Philadelphia Marathon. She and several of her training partners are going to register with Mother Earth to assist them in reaching their goal, so I thought that I'd share this option with you all.

I'm sure you all have certain people that you don't mind soliciting directly for donations and I wish you the best of luck in doing so. However, if your social circles are anything like mine, there are larger groups of folks (with whom you are less close) that you are less likely to solicit because of it may seem a bit awkward to ask them for something without giving them anything tangible in return. In such cases, they are more likely to support you through this type of 'affiliate' model. I am training for the Wilmington Sprint Triathlon in honor of my 39-year uncle who is battling lymphoma right now. When I started the training for this marathon, my friend Faydra suggested I tried this stuff called Muscle Fuel. She gave me a sample, and it did amazing things for me.

The 3 miles we are running seemed to fly by. When I told her how much I liked it, she offered to do a fundraiser for me.

Hello everyone. Ifound this site accidently. I sw the question about raising fund fast. This year I did raffles. I wrote about 200 letters to different merchants in my area asking them to donate either gift certificate or merchandise to help me reach my goal. I added all my contact info and had a great responce. I made over 5000.00 with this raffle.I also went to walmart and tehy had hershey bars 3 for 1.00 I bought 30.00 dollars worth and make a great deal with that also.

Writing a Good Letter/Email

Once you become a Team In Training^® (TNT) member, you will hopefully give some thought as to how you are going to reach your fundraising goal. We understand that raising this much money can be a bit intimidating, but you can be successful if you plan ahead, start early, use the resources given to you, be creative and have fun!

The No. 1 way of raising money in this program is through a personal solicitation letter. This is a letter that you send to extended family, current and past friends, neighbors, old college roommates, your favorite teacher from fourth grade and just about anybody else that you can think of.

However, just sending out letters does not guarantee that you will reach your fundraising goal. Everybody is a bit different, and you may need to also think of an alternative way to raising money through corporate sponsorships and special events.

The Process

What makes the solicitation letter so successful is how little time it takes to send to a lot of people. Once you get your letter written, copied, placed in the envelope, and sent out - all you have to do is wait about two to three weeks before you see the first of hopefully many donations come in. Be sure to include your URL address to your online fundraising Web site powered by Active.com so your donors can donate online with ease. The donation process is pretty simple. You place your letter, a pledge form (with your participant ID number on it) and your URL address on your pledge for as well and your return addressed envelope into a standard envelope. Send it to everyone and let them fill out the pledge card.

Start Now

The key to a successful fundraising campaign is starting early! Re-commitment is only six weeks after each event's kickoff. Therefore, it is important to get your letters out at the beginning! Keep in mind it usually takes two to three weeks before the donations appear on your statement. If you wait too long, you will be recommitting to the program on the guess that people will give and not on what is already in your account. So - start now!

Finally, use our resources! Call your assigned team captain. Use the examples provided in the information packet you received, those on this site, and call the Team In Training staff for our advice and suggestions!

Writing a Good Letter

The key to a successful letter campaign is writing a good letter. Here are some suggestions to writing a successful fundraising letter.

Make it personal
We all love to get personal letters, so make your letter personal. Let them know what else is going on in your life other than this event. Then slide into what the event is about and why you are personally involved.
Use humor
Everybody loves a chuckle, so use humor where appropriate. Start your letter with something like "Have you heard that (your name) has gone off the deep end again. She is thinking about running 26.2 miles..."
Short and sweet
Try to keep the letter to one or two pages. If it is too long, you will lose the reader's interest.
Use your honored teammate
Let people know that you are not just training, but that you are training in honor of someone. Introduce your honored teammate to your donors. Let them know something personal about this child (e.g., favorite ice cream flavor) Finally, tell them the importance of research for children with leukemia (e.g., improved survival rates for acute lymphocytic leukemia)
Ask
Very important! What separates this letter from normal letters is that you are asking them to act. Don't just tell them you are doing this, but that you need their help.
Suggested giving levels
We recommend giving your donors suggested giving levels. If you don't put your overall goal into your letter, donors may not know how much you need to raise, and they will need the suggested giving level to gauge what size donation they think is appropriate. So ask them to donate $2 for every mile that you do ($54.40), or ask them to be a T-shirt sponsor (donate $60+ and their name will be written on the T-shirt you wear at the starting line.) Be creative. Finally, think about setting at least one high giving mark ($250 - $1,000). No one may give you that much, but if someone does - Congratulations!
Set a deadline
We give you a deadline for your own fundraising, but we recommend you set a deadline earlier than that. People are always motivated by deadlines. This way you can assess your fundraising before the real deadline.
Let them know how to donate
Tell them the procedure for making a donation. If they are confused, they are not likely to send a donation, so walk them step-by-step through the procedure. Be sure to include your URL address for your online donation Web site powered by Active.com so that people can easily donate online.
Keep a list
Keep a list of all the people you send letters to. You can then compare this list to the bank statements and you will get to see who hasn't donated. This is important for the next step:
Be prepared to send a reminder
A lot people will get your letter and say, "What a neat idea. Sure I'll help out," and then set the letter down - only to forget about it. The best way to send a reminder is to give training updates. Write to your donors and tell them, "Training is going well" and "I'm going farther this weekend (16 miles) than I've ever gone before." Let them know that fundraising is going well, but you still have a bit farther to go. Ask them nicely if they would consider making a donation in honor of your training. We have seen reminder letters that have been more successful than original letters for bringing in the money. You can also send an email reminder through your personal fundraising Web site to remind people to donate or thank them for donating.

Send a thank-you card. It is really nice to receive a note that says that your donation was important, not to mention that your donors probably want to know how you did. A good thank-you card will set you up well for the next event you do with us!

These are just suggestions of things we have seen work over the past few years. Of course, the final letter needs to come from your heart and hand. Please call your team captains or TNT staff if you want us to review your letter before you send it out.

I will be home this year for my birthday and that is not the norm.

So I am having a Birthday Party, But I am asking everyone to not bring me anything, just to write a check to the LLS for the amount of what ever they where going to get me. 10. Do not think of fundraising as asking for money or a loan. You are asking as an advocate for those in need.

9. Do not discount anyone. While you may not have talked to that high school friend for awhile, it's never too late to resume a friendship by telling them about your involvement with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

8. Use those who are close to you as a "mini-committee" to reach your goal. Ask them to share their Rolodex, send out letters, help plan a party or find raffle prizes.

7. You do not need to know all of your potential donors; it's okay to accept donations from people you do not know. Just remember to thank them. By carrying their fundraising letters everywhere they go, many Team In Training^® (TNT) participants have received donations in bars, the subway and from passengers in elevators, in their offices or apartment buildings.

This past weekend my car was broken into while I was running 18 miles. Pretty much my entire life and identity was taken. Along with my personal possessions and all the things I love was also fundraising money for the foundation. Therefore, the money that I have been working so hard to raise is now gone! I am already having an extremely hard time raising money because I feel that people are at ends meet as it is. So if you have any helpful suggestions or people you know that can donate if you have ALREADY reached your goal please contact me. I was just wondering if others were having as much difficulties as I and some teammates are this season. I've heard that the winter season can be a tough season to fundraise and with the way the economy is lately, that's making our task just that much harder.

Has anyone had any successful fundraisers in this economy that they'd be willing to share stories on to help inspire and keep some of us motivated? I did the letter/email thing to friends and family but I don't want to keep bothering them with reminders when I know funds are tight for a lot of them. I tried planning some fundraisers but for the amount of work going into the planning and preparing, they didn't prove very profitable. I have just over 1 month to raise at least $700 more just to reach my goal and I don't know how to make that happen and am beginning to get nervous that a large amount will be going on to my credit card, which is not what I signed up for! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!

Hello. My name is Joe Kolecki and I am new to LLS. A week and a day ago, our 3 1/2 year old grandson, Jason, was diagnosed with (8,21) acute meylogenous leulemia. He is now in the Rainbow Hospital undergoing the first stages of therapy.

Already, Jason's uncles and I have been thinking of how to ease the inevitable financial burden that will sooner or later beset Jason's family. We have some ideas - accounts opened in Jason's name, and a series of benefit concerts (my oldest son and I are both musicians). But it seems pretty certain that we will need additional help to make the ends meet.

How have some of you met the financial burdens? What programs or benefits are available to families whose lives have been suddenly changed by the advent of such a disease as AML?

Where can I find those wrist bands that were at the kick-off? I bought both youth and adult but they were all Adult. I NEED the youth. There is a fair and fireworks coming up and i want to have them. Can anyone help?
