I was thinking Steph's Survivors, but wanted to be sympathetic to the people who are missed. Any ideas? Told my husband we could be Steph's StormTroopers, but he thought that was dumb...lol. And he's the Star Wars fan.. I desparately need a name to start my team online and fundraising.
Question about balloons-which one do I carry?

I know that white balloons are for survivors, gold balloons are for people that we have lost and for those walking in memory of someone and red ones are for supporters. I am going to walk in my first Light the Night walk in Spetember. I am confused about which color of balloon to carry. I am currently done with treatment ( but may not be done for sure it depends on the study I am participating in and shold find out anytime) so what color of balloon do I carry being a current patient. I also consider myself a survior after everything I have gone through. However, according to LLS which color of balloon is appropriate for me to carry? Or is it up to me to make this decision? What have you all done?

Fundraising ideas (?)

Hello Everyone, Let me introduce myself..I'm Deanna Brown from Laurel, Delaware. I am involved with the L&LS Light the Night Walk in memory of my wonderful husband and best friend, Gerald "Gump" Brown. My husband lost his battle to Leukemia in April 2007; however, our family and friends are continuing the fight he started! Last year was our first year for LTN. Our TEAM GUMP consist of family and friends that wanted to keep Gerry's spirit alive and was about 30 members strong for the Walk. Also we were the #1 fundraising Team for the Rehoboth Beach, DE Walk. <p>

Our biggest fundraiser for the TEAM itself was the sale of T-shirts that have our TEAM GUMP logo on the back, and the LTN logo on the front chest. The logo was created by Cory Atkins, who started the TEAM in memory of Gerry, and in honor of his sister Britney, who is a NHL survivor. The shirts were so popular, we sold out twice, and had people begging for more. TEAM GUMP t-shirt were sold for $20 each, and ALL the proceeds went towards our teams total goal. This year we are going to try to round up some sponsorship money, and include our sponsors names on the front... therefore, we can purchase them at little or no expense, and hopefully we can make alot more money$!$!<p>

We also sold the paper balloons and wrist bands at our family gift shop. Some TEAM members set out collection jars at their church and work places, every single cent makes a difference. We are currently working on the possibility of a dinner at a local restaurant, where we receive a certain percentage of the nights profits, this lets community members get involved and enjoy the meal as well. Some other ideas are car washes, garage sales, and a Beef n' Beer Benefit night at the local volunteer firehouse, in which my husband was President of when he relapsed in 2006. If I come up with more ideas, I will certainly share them on this blog page. <p>

Good luck everyone, and THANK YOU for what you do!!!!

I cant attach a picture to this post, so I am including our MySpace page and my personal blog so you can see our TEAM GUMP logo....

TEAM GUMP

Deanna's blog

I only wish we would have started sooner... since the walk is just about a month away we have lots of organizing to do and since we signed up so late, all the kick off meetings took place, so I think we could use some help. So as I understand it, whoever on my team raises a $100 will get a shirt. Does everyone get to carry a balloon or to carry one you have to raise $100? Also, kids are allowed to walk, what about baby srtollers? I have a few friends with small children. O- and a banner for our team, How do we go about getting one? And the day of the walk I'm sure I have to sign in some where, do I need to be really early or can do it the day before? And also, fundraising ideas... I welcome any, so please anyone with a minute to give me some advice or tips or answer some of my questions, Our team would greatly appreciate it, Thanks so Much!!!

Light the Night and bone marrow donors

As a leukemia survivor, I was really happy to again participate in the DC Light the Night walk. The gold balloons added this year were particularly touching. I ran in to several people I'd met when I was sick. It's a great event.

What was a little disappointing: the Walk included no mention of the need for bone marrow/stem cell donors, and there is no coordination with the National Marrow Donor program folks, it appears. I am lucky enough to have one or two potential donors, but others are not so lucky and end up dying. I met a great little girl on the Walk who'd found a donor, had a transplant and is doing well years later.

it's surprising to me how many people involved in the walks/this issue don't know much about the need for bone marrow/stem cell donors. I wore a t-shirt promoting this, and had a number of people come up to me and talk about it. I recognize that reserach and patient services is the main mission of the Society, and they don't want to have mission creep. HOWEVER, I really feel at the Walk at least there should be SOME mention of the need for donors, or at least a booth or mention in the program...there should be SOME coordination with the National Marrow Donor folks. After all, what better service to patients as part of the Society's mission than helping to promote, in a small way, the need for donors---to an audience that would seem to care about this issue. At the very least, during November's National Marrow Awareness month the Society should encourage folks to sign up on their website.

I met a woman from California at the walk whose sister had died ---didn't have a donor --and she told me both orgs had asssured here there would be someone at a booth registering donors or providing info, but there wasn't anyone. She said the California LIGHT THE nIGHT walks she'd been on were much better about working together to help patients and mentioning the need for donors. She also said apparently in DC there was someone from the Donor program there last year, although no one knew b/c they were in a building and no one could find them. I was on the walk last year and had no idea there was anyone there.

This silo mentality hurts patients I believe.

Why I Participate in Light the Night!

Why I participate in Light the Night Walk!

I was diagnosed with blood cancer in 1998 and have volunteered with the National Capital Area chapter since 2000. The Society was one of the first places that I called for information about my disease and their patient services manager immediately sent me a package in the mail with brochures and materials. Once I received the documents, the patient services manager followed up with with me on the phone and answered my questions. The Society has always served as a place for me to seek information. I have attended many of their patient education program, listened to the teleconferences and participated health fairs. I can say that they extend their services to all people, which is why I continue to support their efforts.

In 2004, I participated in the Washington, DC Light the Night Walk and raised over $4,000. It was a family friendly event and very moving to see all of the survivors, friends, and family members. As I prepare to participate in the event this year, and mark my 10 years as a survivor of multiple myeloma, I know that the funds that I raise will help the Society with their research and programs. The survival rate for multiple myeloma is only 34% and the funds raised enable survivors to seek new treatments, drugs, and access to clinical trials. There are over 11 million cancer survivors and each year more than one million people are diagnosed with cancer. Every survivor's journey is different, however hope keeps us alive.

Dianne was diagnosed with Lymphoma recently, but is now in 100% remission. She and her sweetheart Chuck are to be married this September. They're turning the wedding recepton into a fundraising pre-party for the Light The Night Walk and having their 60 guests join them in the walk the following day as "Team I Do." It's beautiful.

Just wondering a few things. Last year was my first time

participating as a team captian for LIght The Night. Tonight is the

Metro Detroit Kickoff Celebration.

I am an just shy of surviving

for 11 years myself NHL. As well as lost two people dear to me one to

CLL and another recently to NHL. So I am well aware of the fight and

how many fight these diseases today.

I guess I am looking for

Ideas. I have put cans out and about to raise funds. Which are doing

okay. But today I am going to purpose a few new thoughts. With

Michigans Economy being really bad right now.

I gues I am open

to new ideas to go out and fundraise. I am going out today to talk to

people in the community about things I plan on doing.

I guess I

am really wondering about those who are fundraising right now...How

they are doing and how its going as well as what they are doing to

bring in funds.

BTW. Thanks Everyone for getting out there and

doing the job. It really helps me to know many are fighting to those

patients like me and my family. To me being relentless means not only

getting out there walking the walk but doing something about it.

Thanks

Hope
