Hide Your Email Address

If you prefer your email address not be viewable from the community you can follow the steps below to hide it from public view.

Login to the community
Select Profile from the Your Stuff drop down
Click Edit Profile from the Actions section
Next to email select Hide
Click Save

Your email address will now be hidden from public view in the community. Administrators always have access to full profile data.

How to Increase Text Size

If you find that the text on The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community is too small to read there are some things you can do to increase the text size in your browser.

Note: This how-to explains how to increase text size in Firefox 3, Internet Explorer 7, and Safari 4. If you use another browser, do a search in Google or another search engine for "how to increase text size in NAME OF BROWSER". There are many informative how-tos that exist online.

Firefox 3

There are three ways you can increase text size.

First way. Press down the CTRL key on your keyboard and press down the + (plus) key until you are pleased with the text size. You can reduce the text size by pressing CTRL and the - (minus) key, and you can reset the text size by pressing CTRL and 0 (zero).
Second way. In your menu click View, then Zoom then select Zoom Text Only (if you only want to increase the text size). Click View again, then Zoom and then Zoom In to increase the text size. There are also options to Zoom Out or Reset.
Third way. This way you can permanently set your font to a specific size which will apply to all websites you visit in this particular browser. Go to Tools, then Options then select the Content tab. Under Fonts & Colors you can adjust font and font size.

Internet Explorer 7

There are two ways you can increase text size.

First way. Go to Page then Text Size, then select from the options available from Smallest to Largest. If the text size does not change, you will need to go to Tools then Internet Options, then under the General tab click the Accessibility button. Under formatting, make sure the "Ignore font sizes specified on webpages" is checked. The size of the the font should now change.
Second way. You can increase text size by zooming the entire webpage (which will also zoom in on images). Press the CTRL and then + (plus) keys until it is the size you prefer. You can press CTRL and then - (minus) keys to reduce the size, and you can press CTRL and 0 (zero) to reset to the default size.

Safari 4

There are three ways you can increase text size.

First way. Press the command or CTRL key on your keyboard, then press the + (plus) key to increase the text size. You can reduce the text size by pressing the command or CTRL key and the - (minus) key, or you can reset the size of the text by pressing the command or CTRL key and 0 (zero).
Second way. In your menu select the Page menu (indicated by the icon that looks like a page), then Zoom then select Zoom Text Only (if you only want to increase the text size). Click View again, then Zoom and then Zoom In to increase the text size. There are also options to Zoom Out or Actual Size.
Third way. Click the icon that looks like a gear, then select Preferences. Click the Appearance tab and you can adjust the standard font settings by clicking the Select... You can change the font and the size. Once you are done close out of this window (your settings will automatically be saved). You can also adjust the minimum font size for all webpages by going to the Advanced tab and in the Universal Access section clicking the box next to "Never use font sizes smaller than" and entering in the size of the font you want to be the default size for the smallest fonts. Your settings will automatically be saved which means you can close out of this window and return to your browser.

Widgets in Your View - An expanded explanation

The widgets that appear when customizing Your View enable you to create a home page that shows you only the content you want to see every time you log into The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community.

These are widgets (click on the image to enlarge):

When you drag one of them down, like Latest Poll, it expands to display the latest content for that item (i.e. the latest poll posted on the LLS Community). To learn more about this process, go to the document on how to create Your View.

Here is list that explains each of the widgets available to you as a registered user of this online community.

Communities - This displays a list of all communities available in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community.
Formatted Text - You may add any text you want. You may want to post links here that you don't want to forget, or write out a task list.
HTML - You can post any HTML code here which allows you to embed things like a video from YouTube or photos from Flickr.
Latest Poll - This displays the latest poll that has been posted in the community.
Popular Blog Posts - This shows the most popular blog posts. You can specify the number of posts you wish to display, and whether or not you want full blog posts to appear or just links to those posts.
Popular Discussions - This shows the most popular discussions. You can choose how many discussion threads you want to display, as well as from which community you want to display threads.
Popular Documents - This shows the most popular documents, which only administrators can create. You can choose how many documents you want to display, as well as from which community you want to display documents.
Popular Tags - This shows the most popular tags (learn more about tags). You can choose how many tags you want to display, which community's tags you want to see, and whether or not to tags associated with discussions, documents or blog posts.
Recent Activity - This shows recent activity (discussions, documents, blog posts, status updates, etc.) for any specific community you're interested in, and you can specify how many you want to have displayed.
Recent Blog Posts - You can determine how many posts you want to display, and whether or not you want full blog posts to display or only links to each post.
Recent Content - This shows recent content (discussions, documents or blog posts) for any specific community and/or its sub-communities. You can specify how many you want to have displayed.
Recent Discussions - This lists out however many discussions you want displayed, as well as from whichever community you choose.
Recent Documents - This lists out however many documents you want displayed, as well as from whichever community you choose.
RSS Subscription - You can add any RSS feed of your choosing here. Learn more about Really Simple Syndication at www.LLS.org.
Status Updates - This is similar to the status update that you see in Facebook or Twitter. You can choose the number of updates you want to have displayed.
Top Participants - This lists out the top participants in the community (top content creators). You can choose how many participants you want to display as well as for whichever community you choose.
Watch A Tag - You can watch content associated with a specific tag of your choosing. You can choose number of results, and whether or not to show tags for discussions, documents or blog posts.
Watch A User - You can watch content created by a specific user of your choosing. You can choose number of results, and whether or not to show their discussions, documents or blog posts.

How to use Your View and personalize your experience

You'll want to personalize your home page. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of the time you're participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community.

As you and others use The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community, the amount of content there will grow. You'll develop a preference for discussions in certain areas and you'll learn that some areas just rarely have anything you need.

Go the home page and click the Your View tab to begin designing your personalized view.
Click the personalize link to jump into design mode.

Notice how the page in design mode is divided into a top part and larger bottom part. In the box near the top of the page is a list of widgets. Most widgets are special views on content and a few provide other ways to add other things, such as notes and links to websites you like on the web. Learn more about widgets, as well as what widgets are available to you.
Beneath the list of widgets is a design already started for you. This design is an arrangement of widgets for you to change by rearranging it, removing widgets, and adding some you'd rather have.
Notice the widgets you don't want and remove them by clicking their Remove button.
Hover over the list of widgets at the top of the page and notice that each has a description next to the Cancel and Save buttons.
Next, grab the widgets you want, drag them onto your design...
...then drop them where you want them.
Click the widget's Edit link to edit its properties.

This is where you fine tune the widget so that it shows you what you want.
Click Save Properties to save your changes.

Now you can see your changes.
When you've got the widgets you want in the design, click Choose a layout for ways to set up the columns on the page. Notice that the top of the page now displays possible layout arrangements you can use. Click each one to see how your personalized page looks. As you consider layouts, you can drag your widgets from column to column by grabbing the widget's name.
Once you've got your design where you want it, click Publish Layout. As you use The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community, remember that you can come back to design mode by clicking the Personalize link.

How to Stop Receiving Email Notifications

If you want to turn off email notifications from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community, go to Your Stuff then click on Preferences.

Change the Yes buttons to No under Email Notifications Preferences for the notifications you no longer want to receive.

Click the Save button to save your preferences.

You will then see a message at the top of the screen that says "Preferences updated successfully." You will no longer receive email notifications from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community.

Please be aware that this does not turn off existing subscriptions. Here is how you can turn those off.

To see all the discussion threads you have created click on Your Stuff then click on Discussions.

Click on the thread that you want to stop receiving email notifications on.

Under Actions click on the Stop email notifications link.

A message will pop up saying that you are no longer receiving notifications.

Report Abuse

Have you found a discussion that has gotten out of hand or did someone post a topic in the wrong community? You can easily notify our moderators/monitors by clicking the "Report abuse" link listed under Actions.

You can select a category for the report, and you can also add a note of why you think this post should be edited, deleted or moved to another section.

Once you click "Report Abuse" our moderators/monitors will be able to review your report and decide how to proceed. In most situations, the report will be handled by the end of the following business day.

Tags: What they are and how to use them

When you browse by tags, you're using a community-made indexing system. You and other people apply tags like index keywords to new content to make the content more findable. You look for content you want by clicking tag names to see a list of related content. Wherever you go in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Community, you'll see tags that group your content into categories.

Here are a couple of ways you can encounter tags:

Look for the tag cloud. When people in the community adds and tags content, the home page for a space shows something you'll probably find yourself using quite a lot: a tag cloud. A tag cloud visually groups tags so that you can look by popularity (more popular tags are in a larger font) as well as look by alphabetical order.

See the content associated with a tag. Hover over a tag to see the number of times it is assigned to content. Click the tag to see a list of the items it's assigned to.

While you're viewing the list of items associated with a tag, you can filter the list further. In the Tags box you'll see a cloud of the other tags that are applied to the items. As you click those tags, they'll be added to those you're filtering by (below, "leukemia", "childhood_cancer", and "caregivers"). The list of content items gets shorter as you add tags to the filter, showing only those items that include all of the tags you're filtering by.

To add tags to content, you just type in specific keywords at the bottom of the page in the Tags section. You may also click on any of the Popular tags to add them. Then after you submit your content, any time someone clicks on a tag you entered they will see your content and any other content that is using the same tag.

How to Register

1. Go to http://community.lls.org, click Register.

2. Fill out the registration form; click Create Account.

3. You’ll see a confirmation message but will need to confirm your account before you can login.

Confirm Account

4. You’ll receive an email with instructions on how to confirm your account. Follow the instructions in the email.

5. After clicking the activation link in the email you’ll receive a welcome email with additional information. You can now login.

6. Visit http://community.lls.org, click Login.

7. Enter your user name; password.

8. Navigate to the community you want. You can now post & reply to discussions.

3. On the “Account Creation Successful” page, click on the link to go to the main space page.

4. You will receive an email confirmation. You MUST click on the link in that email to complete your registration. This link will take you to the “Validate Account” screen

When viewing a user profile of a community administrator's Status Level will appear as: Community Administrator

Create a Discussion Thread

1. Login to the community and click New > Discussion to start asking a question or make a quick post to find out what others think.

2. Mark your post if it's a question. You can simply post a comment for feedback from others. But if you're asking a question, be sure to mark your post so that others know you'd like an answer.

3. Tell others which responses got you where you wanted to go. When someone responds to your question with a post that's helpful or correct, mark it as such so that others know which is the best answer. You and other users get status points for helpful and correct answers.
