Finally! New shoes from Road Runner! Custom fit and everything =) I found out that I over pronate on my left foot when I run, I have normal to high arches, and that my arch size is 6.5! No wonder I get painful blisters on my arches with size 8.5 shoes! It was pretty sweet actually, they set you up on a treadmill and its all computerized to figure out your foot type, pronation, etc. Highly recommend for all of those people who need new shoes for the marathon coming up. Still plenty of time to wear them in for the big race day! Plus all TNT members are VIP members! So go now and get customed!

I bought some pretty sweet nike plus shoes there..and of course I bought the nike chip that goes with it...plus the wrist band..=) but now I will always know my mileage and time. So today, with my handy wrist band and chip, I found out my magic mile which is 6:50! Before my new shoes my fastest mile was 7:25. Looking pretty..pretty..pretty good =)

Anywhoo...I counted the dollars with Amberly Sunday from our road block, and the team and I raised $735 in dollars...we haven't counted the change part yet, but I'm guessing well over $900 total!! Thank you for all that donated and for everyone who helped with the road block! Everyone was awesome!

Hey Jane,

Thanks for checking in.  Round 2 went pretty well.  My blood work looked good.  Man this stuff really messes with your eyes.  I don't see very clearly during the treatments.  Round 2 wasn't as much fun, but the free coffee was great.  After the prednisone drip and about 12 cups of coffee I was wired.  I finally fell asleep about 2 AM Saturday morning and woke up at 4 AM.  I'm kind of tired of the hot flashes and have more empathy for  women now.  Whine, whine, whine....

Getting scanned between now and round 3 and I think I'll get some good news.  The medical bills are rolling in.  Thank God we have insurance.  I feel horrible for the people who are still working and once they get diagnosed they are stuck in those jobs.  New employers insurance won't cover those pre-existing conditions.  My hat is off to anyone who accomplished these regiments will working.  I would probably fall asleep while driving to work.

Yesterday was my last day of the prednisone pills.  So I may be hibernating for a couple of days.

I haven't heard from Bob (CD20).  I think he had round 2 the week before me.  I tried emailing him, but didn't get a reply.

Was night sweats one of your symptoms?  How are you doing?  I tried checking my old messages to see how you were doing.  It seems like you were working on a durable remission.

God bless you and the other angels of these blog sights.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is proud to congratulate Dr. Brian Druker for receiving the prestigious 2009 Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award. Dr. Druker, along with Dr. Nicholas Lydon and Dr. Charles Sawyers, is receiving the award because of their discovery of and successful clinical trials with Gleevec®, a drug that benefits chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients.

Dr. Druker received critical funding from LLS in 1995 for his research on the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, STI-571, later named Gleevec, through the Translational Research Program. He discovered that CML cells that had been taken from patients were killed by this inhibitor. In 1998, Dr. Druker was able to test Gleevec in clinical trials and 53 of the 54 patients who participated achieved normal blood counts.

Dr. Druker continued to receive funding, and in 2000 was awarded additional funds through LLS’s Specialized Center of Research (SCOR) program. In 2001, Gleevec was approved by the FDA.

Many CML patients, who once may have considered their diagnosis terminal, are now leading normal and healthy lives because of Dr. Brian Druker’s breakthrough research. LLS is proud to have funded this innovative research, and appreciates the valuable work that Dr. Druker continues to provide to our patients and their families.

Visit the Lasker Foundation website to learn more about the Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medial Research Award, and watch this eight-minute video that highlights the important research of these three doctors.

Sorry bout the delay.  I promise, I've been out there though!  We're supposed to be doing 60 minutes 3 times a week, plus the Wednesday and Saturday runs.  I did really good for a week, and then the rains came.  It's been raining non-stop for over a week here in sunny south Texas.  Regardless, we did 8 miles on Saturday.  The rain kindly stopped just as we started and stayed away most of the rest of the day.  It was still good "wet" practice because there were lots of puddles to run through and the humidity made things just that much more difficult.

I thought it would be a good idea to do the return trip with 1:4 intervals instead of 1:5 intervals.  The good news is, I was able to do it.  The bad news is, my time didn't get any faster ... mostly because I hurt so bad I slowed waaay down on the walking part.  I got home convinced I had blisters on the bottoms of my very wet feet.  However, when I took my shoes off I found I had escaped blisters, thank goodness.  I've got a whole new set of sore muscles, though.  My calves and shins never hurt (they ALWAYS hurt in the past), but my thighs, butt and hips have been complaining all weekend.  I shudder to think of how bad it would have been without the ice bath.

This weekend is 9 miles, but I'll be in Denver for a wedding.  I've mapped out a 6.5 mile route that I'm going to attempt on Saturday.  I figure with the change in altitude and not having the group to run with, if I can manage 6.5 miles I'll be thrilled.  My poor husband has offered to come with me.  Fortunately, he's in much better shape than I am so it shouldn't be that bad for him.

Rise and shine Columbus! Wow I forgot how hard it is to wake up at 5am for morning runs! Last time I woke up this early I was answering to my 'alam clock' Zac on the phone to wake me up for our summer-buddy morning runs! However, once I'm up, get a little stretch in, eat my bananas with peanut butter, get some coffee and my ONN updates, I'm ready for the morning air! Running for others makes my long runs seem much easier with meaning. So this morning, I am dedicating my run to Jeanne Reilly, who lost her life at age 67 battling leukemia in 1994. Jeanne was a beloved sister to my dear friend Loisanne. May there soon be a cure!

p.s. Roadblock this morning on Cemetery Road! 10-4pm! Spare some change for those in need! I promise it will put a smile on your face as well as bring hope to those battling blood-related cancers!

Run strong! Run free! Run fun! Run for funds!

Good morning...sorry it's been awhile since an update! I've been so busy between work, training and getting ready to go, I haven't had time to do this! So this may be a long blog to get caught up, .

WOW, so much has happened, where to begin?! There are two big things...we did a practice Tri and I got my wetsuit! YIPPEE! I actually swam about 1300 meters in Boerne Lake! PHEW...that was a huge accomplishment for me! Okay, it took me awhile and I thought I was going to turn in to a prune because I was in the water soooooo long, but I got it done! With no wetsuit or fins, just me and my terrible breathing! Then we did a 15 mile bike ride and a 3 mile run. Those two events almost seemed easy after the swim! It did take me awhile on the bike to catch my breath though! I'm sure I'll have to do that in DC too. Hopefully I can get some pics loaded up here tomorrow.

My next big item is that I've got my wetsuit! Went swimming last Saturday in the Comal River with it, what a BIG difference! I don't have to worry about sinking, that's for sure! I feel like one of those little yellow plastic ducks bobbing in water! It is a lot harder to swim and breath in the thing! I'm already slow and I felt like my arms were in even slower motion than before! I guess the good side was that I got to see lots of fish below me in the river since my arms were moving so slow! Since it was so tight on my arms and that was our last open swim, I decided to go to the outdoor pool at Ft Sam Houston last Sunday to see if it would get looser. It felt a lot better on the arms. Maybe it was because I was able to get more water inside of it, not sure. But it's still tight! The plus side is it makes me look skinnier! Of course, being able to breath easy is an issue, but I'm hoping it'll loosen up the more I wear it! I did swim 600 meters with it in about 40 minutes, so it will probably take me awhile to swim 1500 meters in the river!

We had our send off party Monday night and had a great time while we were eating awesome food! Got all of  out tickets for the event, my hubby, daughter and her BF will be there! I can't wait, I'm so excited! We were going to have one last swim in the river Tuesday night but it rained us out! Guess I'll have to wear the wetsuit in the hotel rooms while we're driving to DC in the hope I can stretch it out!

We left Wednesday morning about 0930, drove through patches of rain and stopped in north Little Rock, Ark for the night. One day closer to DC! I was too pooped to put my wet suit on though! On a positive note, we did get 42 mpg in out VW Jetta TDI! LOVED that! More later and hopefully I can get some pics up here soon!

Blessings for a wonderful day, Mo

Birthday in cms9978's Blog

Posted by cms9978 Sep 10, 2009

What a year it has been.  Last year at this time I was overweight but other than that I was healthy.  Now I am dealing with a lifetime illness that if I don't keep in check will take my life.  This is the first year that I was kind of excited to see my birthday.  Before it was just another day that came and went with little cause for celebration.  I have realized that I have to live my life for me not for my parents, my kids, my husband, but just for me.  I need to find things that make me happy and healthy.  I need to find myself.  Who I am and where I want to be.  Good thing I am my whole life in front of me!)

interesting day in melody's Blog

Posted by melody Sep 9, 2009

This morning was bittersweet for me...i got mail from po box and got a LLS mailer from my friend that recently lost his wife to cancer.  She was a beautiful, smart and loving woman!  Her husband sent me a check donation for LLS and I know it's for her memory...Denise is loved and missed!

I met a man at the gym today who waved at me and started a conversation.  Apparently, Marshall has done several LLS marathons/runs and saw my LLS shirt and happened to be wearing his, too!  it was a small world, of sorts... He found out today a fracture in his foot was going to sideline him from running for 3 months and was going to have to take a break from LLS marathon training...he's done the same marathon i'm running, twice before...and several other Leukemia and Lymphoma races...i was truly inspired...but...tough break about his foot... (corny pun intended)....my prayers are with him for a speedy and full recovery so he can get 'back out there' and help raise awareness and funds for cancer research with LLS!!!! Nice meeting you, Marshall!

fun run in melody's Blog

Posted by melody Sep 9, 2009

Well, i did my long 8 mile run by myself last Sat. and it wasn't near as painful as I thought it would be...the donations continue to come in as well, which is a blessing!  Also, my knees are holding up and I'm icing them, taking cold baths after run to help w/ inflammation (i sound ninety years old don't I??) and i should get dividends from Aleve company for their anti-inflammatory medicine.

I have seen a lot of suffering and death when I worked on the highway patrol but most of it was caused by someone's negligence while driving...with cancer, I've seen strong, productive people with good jobs, happy lives, and dreams that were not fulfilled because cancer took them first.  I have also seen people with cancer that 'beat it' and they go on to support cancer research by working for places like LLS, becoming advocates for those going through cancer currently, and being shining lights just by their 'success story'...it is truly a blessing to see these stories in action right now, being affiliated with LLS!

Yesterday, I couldn't go to team run again,...we only have one car right now and Cubscouts first meeting took precedence over my run...i'd 'catch a ride' with someone but we live out in the country 20 minutes from town and no one is close by to 'catch a ride' with....woe is me, right....ha ha...

I did run my four miles yesterday at gym and today is cross-training day,...hmmm, i'm bored to death with elliptical and stairmaster, maybe i'll spin cycle....i like that...similar endorphin rush to running   ;-O

well, gotta run!!!  (pun intended)

6 more weeks till the Columbus Marathon and I'm definitely getting hot feet! Literally, I'm in need of new running shoes, I'm already 400 miles in, and there's only so much glide sticks and ibuprofen can do! So I can fully say right now training isn't going as planned. I should be at my long runs of uhm..17 miles! ya, I'm at 11..tomorrow I hope to change that however I'm still sore from the other day of running and bodypump. Bodypump really can kick your butt! If anyone is a  memeber at Lifestyles, I highly recommend taking up a bodypump class! Anyways, over all I'm still running and raising money! I'll be doing a roadblock this Saturday from 10-4pm, so if you see a group of girls at intersections with buckets, please spare some change!

Wish me luck on my next run..13miles!

Happy trails everyone! =)

VinuMalik_Triathlete_Article-1.gif

Browse your nearest magazine stand this month and you'll see 28-time Ironman finisher, inventor and entrepreneur Vinu Malik gracing the cover of Triathlete Magazine.

We're proud to note that the over-achieving Vinu is founder and CEO of FuelBelt, a Team In Training Product Partner.

The Triathlete Magazine cover story chronicles Vinu's rise to success as a family man, an entreprenuer and yes, as a long-time triathlete. It's the sort of interview that reminds you that there are few goals you can't accomplish if you have your priorities in place. Vinu clearly lives his philosophy and just as clearly thrives on proving it true!

Check out these excerpts:

On being an young entreprenuer..." Nothing in life is free and there's no easy way. I made my decisions when I had the least amount of money. People see a successful business on the outside, but they have no idea how much I put on the line to get it off the ground."

On balancing priorities..."Family time is always my number 1 priority because it makes everything else in life seem easy."

On training..."Training for a triathlon is definitely hard work and time management is key...when people say they don't have time, they are making excuses. My schedule is not for everyone, but it goes to show you that you can have a very rich life if you focus on family first."

Vinu's winning spirit and terrific outlook are a perfect match for Team In Training, a program that transforms the lives of participants and the patients they serve simultaneously.

Read the article about Vinu in Triathlete Magazine and then sign up for that Team In Training event you always dreamed of. Vinu's outlook will remind you that any goal worth setting is worth accomplishing. Team In Training will help you get there.

Life Lesson in melody's Blog

Posted by melody Sep 4, 2009

It's interesting to me that people with the biggest struggles and challenges seem to have the most gracious and loving natures!  I've seen people "break a nail", so to speak, and act like the world was about to end...and then people I know that have ongoing health challenges, sick loved ones, emotional, or financial struggles, all handle them in stride.  Meanwhile, these same people I'll call "my heroes", you never hear complaining to everyone or going around with a "woe is me" look on their faces.  What a great example for me and the other "chicken littles" (the sky is falling) kinda people!

The running this week has gone well!  Even though hubby was out of town I got in my required training runs (albeit alone) and weight training.  I started taking glucosamine chondroiton with MSM and it's seeming to help my joints/knees especially, already!!!  Thank God!

Well, tomorrow is  the big 7 mile run...i'm going to pace myself and have fun!  Thanks to this week's donors, especially all the notes and sweet comments I've heard from friends about being proud of me and what i'm running for...it really helps!  The mailers I sent out are starting to pour in, too!!!  Keep it up, sweet people!  Even my hubby's coworkers have been chipping in to help out.  I really feel supported by the community of donors out there...my love to you all...

Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend All!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it turns out we only have limited room on our TNT website, so I've moved here to continue the fascinating saga of my training.  I know you've all followed over faithfully to point, laugh, encourage, or whatever it is you're doing reading this.

Last week was our last run at La Cantera and I can't say I'm sorry to see it go.  I won't  miss those hills one bit.  We were doing half our distance so my goal was 6.55 miles.  I ended up pairing up with a woman I've met during training and she somehow convinced me that just wasn't far enough.  So we did 8 miles!!  I've been in a real funk the last few weeks, and I am hoping I've finally broken through that.  It felt so amazing to actually do 8 miles.  That's only 5 miles shy of my total distance, and I've done 5 miles several times already.  For the first time, I actually think I can do this.  Now the bad news.  We did 20 minutes miles, which is WAY WAY slow.  The race organizers would like us all to be doing at least 15 minute miles so I've got a lot of ground to make up in just a few weeks.  I'm now doing 60 minutes at least three days during the week.  Our dog is loving it, and I'm hoping the extra work will translate into speed on the long runs.  I mapped out a four mile trip so I can visually see how close I am getting before I turn around at 30 minutes.  Next week we move to a less hilly area.  Let's see if the hills really have impacted me that much.  I really hope so!

We just learned that Mike Hamel was in a car accident last week and broke his back. As you all recall Mike is the one who did a superb job interviewing his oncologist, as well as lending us one of his blog posts last year. As always, his humor has stayed intact and he is still actively writing updates on his blog, Open Mike.

One of his recent posts asks readers to share suggestions for superhero names since he’s now wearing some heavy duty armor to protect his back. Why don’t you head on over there and share some ideas as well as your own good wishes?

Feel better Mike!  And thank you for keeping everyone in the loop on your blog!

New collaboration supports LLS while making more great seats available to the summer’s most sought-after concerts.

TFC_logo.jpg

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has partnered with Tickets-for-Charity®  to offer fans a convenient way to purchase great seats to high-demand concerts – Coldplay, Billy Joel & Elton John, Kenny Chesney, Counting Crows and many more – while supporting the fight against blood cancers. Seats on Tickets-for-Charity’s website are available at face value plus a separate donation amount that now may also directly benefit LLS. Learn more

Tickets-for-Charity connects with artists, managers, venues and promoters to set aside an allotment of seats to be sold on its website for typically the same price or better than fans would pay elsewhere. The difference with Tickets-for-Charity is that 100% of the benefit above face value goes directly to supporting partner charities, including LLS, and the original face value of the ticket is paid back to the artist. Tickets-for-Charity charges an industry standard service fee to help maintain the platform and facilitate all donation processing.

Recently profiled in The Wall Street Journal, Tickets-for-Charity CEO Jord Poster notes that the purpose of Tickets-for-Charity is to give concertgoers the opportunity to help others. "All we're doing is creating a socially positive option for consumers when they can't find what they want," Poster says. "Rather than paying $400 to a broker or scalper, they can pay $400 to Tickets-for-Charity. The difference is that most of the benefit is going to charity rather than a secondary reseller."

Visit ticketsforcharity.com when you're looking for your seats to the next hot concert -- and know you can easily support life-saving cancer research when you do.

End of Summer in cms9978's Blog

Posted by cms9978 Sep 1, 2009

Well at last the summer is coming to an end.  My daughter just finished up her showing season with a bang.  She show at the Iowa State Mule and Donkey Show in Bloomfield, IA.  It was 2 days of showing and they were long.  She had to compete against kids that were a lot older then her in two of her classes, Showmanship and Mulemanship.  But she stood her ground getting third in her showmanship class and sixth in the mulemanship class.  Not bad.  Then she did very well in the rest of her classes.  Standing in first or second most of the classes.  But she did so well that she ended up getting high point 10 and under award.  She got herself some new chinks.  She is so excited.  But the weekend ended on a sad note.  The mule she was working with for the last two shows was sold on Sunday.  Her and her cousins all cried, her aunt and I tried to keep an upper lip about it but we were sad too.  But that is the way of the business.  So now she has to start working with a new mule and will see what next year brings!  I will post pictures when I get them!)

Great weekend! in melody's Blog

Posted by melody Aug 29, 2009

Last night our friends Jim and Pat came over for dinner.  I had the day off from training and thoroughly enjoyed my 'treat' which was going to see Julie & Julia movie.  That evening, Jim gave me an envelope from him and Pat with a $50.00 donation in it the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!  You'd have thought it was for me personally I felt so excited...He told me that a former coworker of mine had been diagnosed with a blood cancer and was optimistic that they would find a cure for it soon!  Right now he feels fine but his blood numbers during routine blood test came back elevated which was his only sign.....scary.   As my friend Jim said, "sadly, cancer can strike any of us at anytime."

Today, we ran on a nice, muddy trail for our Team In Training team run...we did six miles and it was a little tough just because it was so humid.  Sandra, our TNT representative and support/buddy asked if anyone would like to share who they were running for...two of our members were running for a gentleman who lost his battle with cancer last year, his Thomas Roach, I believe...http://libertynewspaper.org/Documents/Jan%202009%2014.pdf

http://libertynewspaper.org/Documents/Jan%202009%2014.pdf      so we ran the run today in his honor!  Everytime it got hotter, the hills longer, or my legs weaker, I thought of Mr. Roach and how much he'd love to be out here dealing with a little soreness and discomfort from a training run...it was very humbling!

Earlier this week I had raised my fundraiser amount to $3000 and then lowered it back down to $2400 because the amount seemed too daunting to tackle!  I guess a friend of mine must have seen that I lowered the amount and sent me a sweet note about not lowering my fundraiser amount but that I should RAISE it!  Dave Hopper is a wonderful friend and attached to the email was a newspaper article written about a police officer from Ocala, FL and his courageous fight against cancer he'd lived with for ten years (and died this week from unfortunately)!  Here's the article...and Dave was right so I raised my amount back up to $3000.  and I'm hoping that friends, family, and complete strangers will support me in knocking out cancer!!!  Help me reach that $3000 goal and cure cancer!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the sweet and simple note from Dave that I received this week...sometimes my motivation comes not only from reaching the monetary goals and receiving money to help fight cancer and help the cancer patients and their families...sometimes it comes in subtle encouragement from friends and family who are interested in what you are doing (Kelly), cheer you on in your efforts (A lot of you), and take you out for lunch when you're down (thanks Melissa)...

Melody, don't be discouraged.  Keep pressing on.  This is why you are doing this:

Thanks to our colleagues at Gap and our friends online, our summer Give and Get campaign promotion was another success! Because of you and your efforts sharing this promotion online, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will receive nearly $500 thousand to support our life-saving research to find a cure for blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. That's an amazing accomplishment for one weekend worth of shopping at Gap, Inc. stores!

As you noticed during the launch of this campaign, we featured Lance Bigelow (see our launch blog post, Lick Leukemia with LLS and Gap), who is living proof that the research we fund has a direct impact on patients. 60 years ago, when LLS was founded, a blood cancer diagnosis was almost always fatal. Since that time, the nearly $1 billion dollars we have invested in innovative research has helped to increase survival rates of some blood cancers by double or even triple. In fact, blood cancer survival rates rose by as much as four-fold from 1960 to 2000.

All of that was possible thanks to partners like the Gap and people like you - who either directly participated  in our fundraising efforts or helped spread the word. Your support makes a difference.

Thank you for helping us serve our mission to find a cure for all blood cancers and help patients and their families live better, longer lives.

Yeah, I actually swam without getting tired out in the first 25 meters!    We did about 1300meters in the Comal River and I changed my breathing strategy. I tried breathing every other arm stroke instead of every fourth...and it worked! Plus I slowed down instead of trying to be fast. The combination worked, thank goodness, and I wasn't so tired when we finished! Okay, you "real swimmers" out there reading this...I know what you're thinking, but hey, if it gets me through my first Olympic length triathlon, I'm all for it! Maybe when I finish, then I'll work on extending my breathing. I can't wait to get my wetsuit. There's only a couple of us who don't have it, they ordered my wrong size. For those that know me, you know I'd never fit in a SS, except in my dreams!    Hopefully it'll come in tomorrow so I can practice with it a couple times before we leave to get use to it. They say it helps keep one bouyant...I hope so, as I need all the help I can get! More swim and breathing practice this week.

week 3 in melody's Blog

Posted by melody Aug 25, 2009

We had a great time Saturday.  The run was easy (5 miles) and the walk/run method is great for keeping you from getting too winded/worn out.  Afterwards (at a breakfast 'meet and greet' sponsored by LLS, we got to meet our 13 yr old honored hero, Collin, that has beaten cancer, and continues to fight the 'good fight' dealing w/ lingering health concerns and the threat of an increased possibility of  getting secondary cancers.  He wasn't even two when his family found out that he had cancer and thanks to his baby brother Christopher's cord blood donation, Collin has been cancer free for over ten yrs!  He and his whole family are such an inspiration.  I can't even imagine what his parents went through having a baby boy with cancer, a newborn, and trying to maintain your family and marriage!  The sad thing is that this is just one family's story among many out there,...and that is why I'm running,...to support the families, fund research, and hopefully find a cure for cancer through research!

Back to the running, I felt great when I got home Saturday and so Sunday, instead of doing my easy three mile recovery run, i did almost five miles and my knees are 'feeling it' two days later.  I've iced them, and I'm sure the leg weights workout Monday morning followed by Spin (Cycling) class didn't help my knees to feel better.  I think I need to listen to coach and follow the schedule for working out/running...ha ha!

Now I have to sign off, my three year old is getting very pouty and impatient!  Won't make it to the TNT team run tonight because of my husband's work schedule (and older son's first day of school was today so early bedtime....) but at least this past weekend we all mailed out our donation letters so hopefully all my friends, family, and supporters will start writing those checks/sending cash to help me raise the funds for LLS and to help cancer patients and their families!!!  Thanks to everyone!

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is proud to now offer live online chat for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients, which launches its first session this Tuesday, August 25. This live chat, called Living with CML, runs for two hours every Tuesday evening from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET. Living with CML joins the long-running Living with NHL: Gaining a Sense of Balance chat, which runs every Monday and Wednesday evening from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET.

Each chat session is hosted and run by an IRC Moderator, who is responsible for making sure that chat participants stay on topic and are respectful of each other and differing opinions. The purpose of each chat is to provide patients a safe place to discuss their stresses and triumphs through any aspect of their experience with CML or NHL.

Learn more about live online chat, and visit the registration page to sign up for either chat.

Not sure online chat is for you, but you still want to connect with other patients? Try out the LLS Blood Cancer Discussion Boards, an online forum devoted to the blood cancer patient and caregiver community.

Week Three Training in Ginny's Blog

Posted by ginnym Aug 23, 2009

Well, today was cool and perfect for running. I went about 3.5 miles today, thanks to Mike's help in keeping me motivated. I haven't missed a training day yet. So fas, so good. My fundraising has kind of stalled. I'm at $800, but I need another $4,000. Long way to go! Someone helped  me out with a bucket drive option, which if I can swing it, I'll manage it since that will bring in a couple of hundred dollars. Plus I'm going after businesses now. Hopefully they'll feel generous and want to help.

So I keep fundraising and I keep running! We'll get there!

Go Team!

Thanks for visiting my training blog! I ran out of room to continue my training log on my original website, so I started a blog here.

YIPPEE! It's official, I'm a Triathlete! I completed my first Triathlon on Ft Sam Houston last Sunday, 16 Aug. It was a mini-length, with a 400 meter swim, 15 mile bike ride and a 2 mile run. WOW! It was quite an experience! Needless to say the swim was my weakest event. It seemed like it took me forever to get out that pool! The pool was a 50m length, so I only had to four complete laps! After the first 25 meters, I was totally out of breath! Guess I still need to work on my breathing! I ended up doing the crawl, side stroke and even the dog-paddle to get through the swim! Hopefully I'll do better when I swim in the Potomac River next month! My transition to the bike took awhile since I was still out of breath from the swim. I was just leaving the transition area when the leader was completing his first loop of the bike route! I managed to finish not too far behind the pack! I was able to change in to the running gear quicker, not so tired! I thought the run would be relatively easy since it was short, but I didn't take in to account getting off a bike and running up a little hill! I had a few cramps in the calves, but eventually they went away as I continued. I'm so glad I got one under my belt before my big event! I need to thank my co-worker Tina, who was there to share all of her tips and tricks! Granted the event next month is quite abit longer, but I feel more confident now. On to a new week of training and working on my swimming/breathing!
