Today we are launching The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s first blog! There are a few things that we hope to accomplish with this new communication tool, but most of all we want to make this an informative and interesting destination for you: patients, caregivers, and anyone else affected by any of the blood cancers.

A few topics we plan to cover are advocacy, teleconferences, news articles, and more…

We’d love to get ideas from you, though. What do YOU want us to write about? (To comment you must first register if you haven’t already – registration is easy and free!)

To make sure you are the first to know when we have posted a new blog entry subscribe to our RSS feed. Or you can bookmark this webpage in your browser and visit us often.

How is this blog different from the Discussion Boards? Why would I come here instead of going there? Just curious. Do you plan to link to other blood cancer blogs?

Thanks for your great questions PJ! You're right - the blog and the Discussion Boards are very similar. They both allow for conversation and interaction between The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the public. The difference is that the blog will allow us (LLS) to have a primary place where we can share information and insights with the public in a more informal environment, whereas the Discussion Boards are more of an environment for peer interaction; patients and caregivers can be the primary communicators. Neither one is a better destination for you - I'd recommend that you visit and participate in both. Some people prefer to only read and participate in one or the other; it's really what you like best.

To answer your last question, we will link to other blogs on a case by case basis. It's important that we link to websites we believe to be good resources for the people we aim to serve.

I would like to see more action on behalf of young adults with cancer.
Twenty- and thirty-somethings have very unique, wide ranging needs: finances, fertility, body image, career development, discrimination, parenting concerns, relationships...so many issues.
Could the LLS set up a resource site for people in this age group?
I have heard (through a link on the Livestrong site) that there is an annual conference on young adults with cancer, but haven't been able track down any details.
As an oncology certified RN, I frequently refer patients and family members to the LLS website, but this particular age group really seems to be underserved.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Thanks for your question - you bring up an important issue. While we do not currently have a website like the one you are proposing, we do have a lot of valuable resources that young adults can use. The Patient Services section of our website is the perfect place for people who are newly diagnosed - they can speak to a healthcare professional or find out more about financial aid. We also have vibrant discussion boards for people who need peer support. There are also regularly held teleconferences and webcasts that cover topics regarding both physical and emotional health.

We will look more closely at your suggestion, and appreciate you taking the time to let us know what you think.

You asked about those who are keeping personal cancer blogs, so I figured I'd respond by giving you a link to my blog, "A Pastor's Cancer Diary":

I've included a link to this blog over there.

I'm glad to see this blog get started, and will be following it.
